After her uncle was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in early December, this year’s Miss Mexico Detroit pageant carried deeper meaning for Ana Yadira Sánchez-Rangel — 📝 & 📸 by @visualdavid for @freep.
A moment of unity in Detroit. Hundreds of “Vote By Nov. 3” signs filled the gym at Cass Technical High School in Detroit on Saturday night, as supporters gathered for a get-out-the-vote rally ahead of the midterm elections — photos for @freep.

Horrified to wake up to this news from the West Bank and so grateful to those who helped Heidi after the attack.

It’s been a while since my last post, so I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who continues to follow my work. I’m still at the @freep, doing what I love and telling the stories of this beautiful city. But I’m back from my little hiatus for this one.
One last time on the mound. Detroit Tigers pitcher @JustinVerlander made the final start of his 21-year @MLB career this past weekend at Comerica Park, pitching into the sixth inning against the Pittsburgh Pirates before saying goodbye alongside his family and teammates.
Verlander struck out six over 5⅓ innings in his 557th and final career start. Here are a few moments from a game I’ll remember for the rest of my life — photos for @freep & @freepsports.
Justin Verlander's Tigers farewell was last weekend, but @freepsports gave him one last goodbye in this Sunday's print edition (along with grades for the whole team, not pictured), with some great pics by @visualdavid and some throwback pages by, ahem, some old designer (mostly).

What a roller coaster of a couple of weeks. Now that I’m finally home and have had a chance to catch my breath, I can’t help but smile thinking about the wonderful people I was lucky enough to meet and the experiences we shared. – at New York, USA
Here is a small glimpse into a week filled with growth, friendship and connection. For now, I’m putting my phone down and sitting with all the lessons, conversations and relationships that came out of the workshop. – at New York, USA
It’s easy to talk about health care disputes in terms of contracts, deadlines and negotiations. It’s much harder to look at a 7-month-old baby and realize what’s actually at stake — photos for @freep. – at Detroit, MI
Behind every policy decision and contract dispute are real people whose lives are profoundly affected by the outcome. For Andrew and Amanda, the contract dispute was never just about a contract. It was about making sure their son could continue receiving the care he needs. – at Detroit, MI
