Writer, researcher, and film historian focusing especially on the silent/pre-Code eras (and the overlooked faces within). I talk a lot about Jean Harlow.

I was lucky enough to receive a fabulous tour of Jean Harlow’s 1932 custom-built mansion on South Beverly Glen Boulevard, now listed for the first time in decades. Read about the history of this well-preserved, idiosyncratic property and take a walkthrough with me at link below:

Remembering Hope Emerson on her birthday. My favorite film with Emerson so far is House of strangers. The film with Emerson I’d like to see the most is Caged.

One narrative tendency we unfortunately lost after the 19th Century is how community can be super fucked up and toxic and evil lol

#RIP Elke Sommer. A producer on ‘The Prize’ told her: “You have to look at the screen: behind you there is an aura. I can’t explain it, but you’ve got it and [others] haven’t, despite all their beauty, their physical charms and their features.” hollywoodreporter.com/movies…

Tonight in Halloweenville: Carnival of Souls, which should have been only the first of Herk Harvey's many features and turned out to be his only one; its virtues reach far beyond shocks and shudders to the metaphysics of modern life; on @tcm at 2:30a.m.: newyorker.com/culture/richar…

I wrote about the life and times of the president of the first Official Jean Harlow Club, Minnette Shermak, who singlehandedly proves fan circles have been around a lot longer than we think. Link below

Can I do William Wellman Thursday because I forgot William Wellman Wednesday? And can we ignore Glenn Ford in this photo during Gallant Journey (1946)?

There are many better things to do than being a contrarian but it never stops being funny to me how mad people get when you make any kind of joke about The Beatles

It’s on par with making a joke about Taylor Swift. You just never hear the end of it

Rare W for the Dolores Costello Fan Club 2026 Lineup… and I actually get to remove a film from my lost film wishlist…. yay!!!!
Incredible news to close the year! The 1926 silent film THE LITTLE IRISH GIRL, considered lost since the late 1940s has been found in Australia and has now been restored by the National Film and Sound Archive. The film stars Dolores Costello and John Harron.

I have been wanting to see this film for a long time based off the publicity portraits of Dolores alone, and it might be underwhelming, but hello
