It is said, #RabindranathTagore had handed over his manuscript of Rakta Karabi (The Red Oleander) to veteran thespian Sisir Bhaduri in the early 1920s. But the play could not be staged. Because, no one could be found for the role of Nandini, the protagonist, an earth angel who represented indomitable human spirit against tyranny, oppression and greed. Until, 1954, that is. Long after the poet's death, when Bohurupee staged the play with Tripti Mitra in the lead role. And history was made. #Today is her birthday. She would have been a centenarian. Tripti as Nandini. (Right) At one of the shows, PC Mahalanobis must have invited #Nehru 👇

Professor Ashoke Sen is an extraordinary human. In 2012, he won the inaugural Fundamental Physics Prize, worth $3 million. He could’ve well used the amount for personal luxury, instead he donated a large chunk of it to help students, fund fellowships & support science in India.
Ashoke Sen has been awarded the prestigious Oskar Klein Medal for 2026, becoming the first Indian physicist to receive the honour. Previous recipients include Nobel laureates Chen-Ning Yang, Steven Weinberg and Hans Bethe, who received the medal in its first three years.

Ek Ladki Bheegi Bhaagi Si - The song that was not just shot, it was lived. The year is 1958. The film is Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi, directed by Satyen Bose. It has the three Ganguly brothers, Ashok, Kishore and Anoop, and the most beautiful woman on screen, Madhubala. The music is by S D Burman and the words are by Majrooh Sultanpuri. And the voice, the voice is Kishore Kumar himself. The situation is simple and magical. It is raining heavily in Bombay. Madhubala's car breaks down at night. She walks into a garage that says open 24 hours. Inside, Kishore Kumar is fast asleep. She wakes him up and scolds him for sleeping on duty. He gets angry, then agrees to help. He pushes her car to the garage and while repairing it, starts singing, looking at her through the windshield, at her wet saree, at her trying to dry her hair. She is shy, she is smiling, she has no idea this mechanic in front of her will become her husband two years later in real life. Now for the stories behind the song that people do not know. Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi was Kishore Kumar's own production. There is a famous anecdote that he made this film hoping it would flop. He had a huge income tax notice and he wanted to show a loss. So he made a film with his own brothers and a simple story of cars and love. But destiny had other plans. The film became a superhit, one of the biggest comedies of its time. Kishore was so annoyed with its success that he gifted the entire film and all its rights to his secretary Anoop Sharma. That income tax case, by the way, went on for almost 40 years. This film is where the real love story began. During the shooting of Ek Ladki Bheegi Bhaagi Si, Kishore and Madhubala were just co-stars. But Kishore's carefree energy, his ability to make everyone laugh between shots, made Madhubala fall for him. On this set, Kishore used to mimic S D Burman Da's style of singing and make Madhubala laugh continuously, that famous Madhubala laugh that you see 20 percent of the film is actually real. Two years later in 1960, they got married. And about the song itself, S D Burman Da composed it like a Broadway musical piece. Notice how it starts from dialogue, it does not start like a typical song. Kishore is talking while holding a spanner and suddenly the tune starts. Majrooh Sahab wrote that cheeky line, tan bheega hai sar geela hai uska koi pench bhi dheela hai, such a playful way to say she is both beautiful and a little crazy. That is why even after 67 years, when it rains and a girl runs with a hand on her head, every Indian heart still sings, ek ladki bheegi bhaagi si, soti raaton mein jaagi si. #EkLadkiBheegiBhaagiSi #ChaltiKaNaamGaadi #KishoreKumar #Madhubala #SDKing #SDBurman #MajroohSultanpuri #GoldenEra #OldIsGold #RetroBollywood #EvergreenSongs #RainSong #MonsoonMelody #BollywoodClassics #1950sBollywood #KishoreKumarSongs #MadhubalaForever #VintageBollywood #ClassicHindiSongs #BollywoodTrivia #BehindTheSong #BollywoodHistory #HindiCinemaMagic

Remembering Kishore Kumar. Teen Deviyan Till the late 60's Kishore Kumar used to sing only for himself. He refused to give play back to any other actor. But he made an exception for Dev Anand. Under the music direction of SD Burman Kishore Kumar playbacked only for Dev. The musical association between Kishore Kumar and Dev Anand is one of the most charming chapters in Hindi film history. Kishore's youthful exuberance, playful mischief and effortless yodelling perfectly complemented Dev Anand's carefree, romantic screen persona. In this song romantic poetry meets Kishore 's expressive voice Song courtsey @Upjeet7

Bees saal baad 1962 This was the first major song recorded by Lata Mangeshkar after a nearly three-month period of severe illness . Because of her damaged vocal cords and weakness, Mangeshkar struggled immensely during the recording. After three failed attempts, she broke down and told composer Hemant Kumar to replace her. Kumar refused to back down, insisting that only her voice could do justice to the track. He gave her a few days to rest, and on her next attempt, she recorded the classic version we hear today. Hemant Kumar actually preferred the raw, eerie energy of one of the rehearsal takes so much that he chose to use it as the final track for the movie rather than the strictly polished studio takes. The song was a massive critical and commercial success, earning two major awards at the 1963 Filmfare Awards: • Lata Mangeshkar won Best Female Playback Singer (her second career win). • Shakeel Badayuni won Best Lyricist. While many music enthusiasts and classical artists debate whether the song is rooted in the Sivaranjani raga, musicologists note that the heavy structural emphasis placed on the Komal Ga (flat third note) bends the traditional rules of the raga, giving it a uniquely unsettling, ghostly feel. Picturised on Waheeda Rehman and Biswajeet. Song courtsey @Upjeet7

“Half Ticket” (1962) is a much loved comedy movie starring Kishore Kumar & Madhubala. In addition to its story, this movie is remembered for its wonderful songs as well. Here is a Kishore Geeta Dutt duet from this movie. This song is a romantic comedy song, or comical romantic song- whichever way one prefers to look at it. Picturised wonderfully well on Kishore Kumar and Madhubala. The singing is wonderful , as is the picturisation. Shailendra has come up with the light hearted lyrics of this song. Salil Chaudhary is the music director. Half Ticket was one of the last films released during Madhubala’s lifetime where she starred as a leading lady alongside Kishore Kumar. Her health was already declining during the early 1960s, making her radiant, energetic appearance in this song even more remarkable. Song courtsey @Upjeet7

The Nobel Prize in medicine was awarded Monday to three scientists working on the mechanisms the brain uses to switch on, or off, the activity of individual nerve cells. Karl Deisseroth, 54, Peter Hegemann, 71, and Georg Nagel, 73, have carried out research into light-gated ion channels and optogenetics. They are based at universities in Germany and the United States. The Nobel Assembly lauded their work, writing on X that the method "is now being used in laboratories around the world to reveal the brain's mysteries." The assembly said Deisseroth is based at Stanford University in California, while Hegemann is at Humboldt University in Berlin and Nagel at the University of Wurzburg, also in Germany.

Koi Sone Ke Dilwala Koi Chandi Ke Dilwala - Maya (1961) This is one of the most beautiful philosophical songs of the Golden Era, from the film Maya (1961). Vitals: Film - Maya (1961) | Director - D.D. Kashyap | Cast - Dev Anand, Mala Sinha | Singer - Mohammed Rafi | Music - Salil Chowdhury | Lyrics - Majrooh Sultanpuri In this scene, Dev Anand is a simple-hearted man standing alone in a high-society party. Looking at the people around him, he realizes that some have hearts of gold, some have hearts of silver, but his own heart is made of glass - sheeshe ka dil - fragile, innocent and easily broken. Majrooh Sultanpuri has explained a whole philosophy of life in just one line - Sone ka dilwala_ means a person who is exceptionally kind and generous, Chandi ka dilwala is the modern romantic, and Sheeshe ka dilwala_ is the emotional, sensitive soul whose heart shatters at the slightest hurt. The lyric says, Mehfil yeh nahi teri, deewane kahin chal - this gathering is not for you, move on. The composition is pure Salil Chowdhury magic - a gentle waltz rhythm with his trademark haunting flute and accordion interludes. Rafi Sahab has sung it in such a soft, soulful, almost whispering style, which was perfect for Dev Anand's pensive mood. A song that was relevant in 1961 is even more relevant today. An evergreen classic that will never fade. I hope you will like my humble rendition of this timeless gem.
