“Waitlist Zero is proud to support the Lauren Shields Organ Donation Act. This legislation will make it easier for Americans who want to give the gift of life to register as organ donors.
Lauren understood the extraordinary power of organ donation personally. After receiving a heart transplant at just eight years old, Lauren devoted her life to advocating for organ donation.
Tragically, Lauren died at just 26 while waiting for a kidney transplant. We can think of no more fitting tribute to her life than legislation that helps more Americans become organ donors and allows more patients to receive the lifesaving transplants they need. We are grateful to Representatives @RepMikeLawler and @RepJoshG for honoring Lauren’s remarkable legacy and championing lifesaving organ donation,” said Elaine Perlman, Executive Director, Waitlist Zero.

We can have a waitlist of kidney donors instead of 96,000 suffering patients waiting for a lifesaving kidney.
Half of them die while waiting.
Delighted to join @Mario_Macis & @KahnEthx at @NYPL to discuss donor compensation.
3 physician surveys & 5 public surveys found support for compensating living kidney donors for their public service.

NEW YORK LIVING DONORS: Has the NYS Living Donor Support Program helped cover your expenses? A reporter wants to speak with you!
When we fought to pass the New York State Living Donor Support Act, our goal was simple: make sure no one has to pay out-of-pocket or lose their paycheck just to save a life.
Today, the program is actively reimbursing living kidney and liver donors for lost wages, travel, and recovery costs—and now, a reporter is looking to tell this story.
Who we’re looking for:
A living kidney or liver donor who donated in New York State.
Someone who applied for and received reimbursement for lost wages, lodging, travel, or related expenses through the NYS Living Donor Support Program.
Willing to do a brief interview to share what the reimbursement meant for you and your family.
Highlighting real stories helps ensure lawmakers keep funding this vital program and lets future donors know this financial lifeline exists.
Interested or want more details?
Send me a direct message here on Facebook, drop a comment below, or email me directly at [email protected].
(If you know a fellow NY donor who might fit, please tag them or share this post!)

Pretty please, make sure you get your kidney health checked during your physical.
Most doctors won’t unless you request it.
Early diagnosis of CKD is critical for treatment success, and the condition can be detected using a simple and affordable urine test; however, the test isn't routinely used across all health care settings, and often only when kidney disease has already progressed.

🏆 Nobel Prize winner Al Roth promotes the End Kidney Deaths Act on @Voxdotcom's The Grey Area with @BryanRWalsh!
At about the 29-minute mark, Roth from @Stanford explains that this pilot could “show that compensation matters and can increase the supply.”
Roth points out that transplantation is far less expensive than dialysis, and Medicare pays for both, so increasing transplantation could save taxpayer dollars while allowing us to find out whether being more generous to these extraordinarily generous donors would increase the supply of kidneys.
This is exactly why we need the End Kidney Deaths Act (H.R. 2687): test the idea, collect the evidence, save lives.
When a Nobel Prize-winning economist whose work helped transform kidney exchange says this idea deserves to be tested, Congress should listen.

Lauren Shields spent her life helping others receive organ transplants. Tragically, she died at 26, still waiting for another kidney.
She was the same age as my son Abie, who donated his kidney to save a stranger's life.
About 25 Americans die every day waiting for a kidney transplant. We can save them.
The End Kidney Deaths Act has the potential to save up to 10,000 lives and $4 billion annually.
