Fellow ethnographers:
Imagine one of your PhD students is about to head to the field.
1) What would you have them read in advance of their first, exploratory field trip?
2) What tips would you offer for first-time fieldworkers?
Please RT.

July is Disability Pride Month and in recognition, I'm sharing an excerpt of the book I'm writing (manuscript is nearly halfway done!) on disability and employment, titled "Crippled Careers: Navigating the Workplace with a Disability."

ALT Chapter 16: The Business Case for Hiring People with Disabilities One thing that’s rather interesting about my career journey is that it’s involved both being stigmatized as a result of my disability in some workplaces, as well as using my disability as a selling point in other workplaces. And let me reiterate that disability is not a weakness in the workplace even though it’s been largely perceived that way. Instead, having a disability is actually a selling point — people with disabilities are an untapped yet valuable part of the workforce.

Before severe neurological symptoms are obvious, #IVDD is often misdiagnosed as a tummy problem, pulled muscle, strained muscle in leg, undefined prob with the tail, or a strain.

How do you manage rejection? I normalize it as nothing more than redirection, which is why I launched @DeMinimisMag as a space that highlights rejection. If you have a story sitting dejectedly on your hard drive, please consider submitting! #JournoRequest medium.com/de-minimis

I finally got my first byline in the @globeandmail! I wrote for @Globe_Careers about inclusive language in job postings and how subtle word choices can often deter people with disabilities from applying. Thanks for sharing your insights, @kellydilworth, @casecanada, @RWAworks!

Hello #eventprofs/#meetingprofs! I'm writing a piece for @ACFacilities/@meetingsmags on how planners coach their event speakers/presenters on engaging event attendees. Please reach out if you have insight to share! #JournoRequest

I'm still looking for folks (ideally PWD) to share experiences with @Globe_Careers! Have you ever felt excluded from applying to a job due to the language in the posting? Any companies doing disability friendly language right? Please reach out! #JournoRequest #Disability
#JournoRequest: I'm writing a piece for @Globe_Careers on how language in job postings often unintentionally discourage people with disabilities ("must be able to sit for extended periods of time"). If you have an experience and want to share, please reach out! #DisabilityTwitter

Yesterday Mom booked my very last work flight on @SouthwestAir for April 25. We are flying to San Diego so Mom can give a presentation on accommodating service dog handlers in science laboratories to the Southwestern chapter of the Biological Safety Information Network (BioNet) which promotions biological safety throughout California.
The support specialist with @SouthwestAir said he requested the crew give me a final sign off on our flight on April 25 for my retirement after 9 1/2 years of dedicated service. Over my career I flew over 50,000 miles assisting Mom while she traveled the US advocating for others with Empower Ability Consulting (EAC). She says I leave behind a legacy of accessibility and inclusiveness for so many across the globe (in 8 countries), our scope has gone even beyond science in the most recent years.
When we began our journey service dogs were not allowed in most science labs. Now the barriers are coming down because we never gave up. When I began service Mom was recovering from a brain injury and studying neuroscience and could not communicate, now she gives presentations and travels extensively to advocate. EAC expanded last year beyond academics into the employment sector and science industry, the entertainment industry, travel industry, and has developed a team of diverse disability, employment, science, and legal experts. We are working with governmental bodies to change policies to be inclusive. We’re potentially going to be testifying in a Congressional Hearing to change exclusionary language in the CDCs Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL), 6th edition. We’ve written a book about our adventures which we hope is published soon. And so much more! I’ve been by her side every step - one paw print at a time.
Our mission is to make the world universally inclusive. When I retire, after my last trip to San Diego Pax Bellator, my successor will take over. I will remain here with Mom, Marshal Jim, Pax, and the Muppets as the CED (Chief Executive Dog)! While in San Diego, after my final work commitment Mom and Marshal Jim are taking me to the beach for my retirement party - so I can swim in the ocean, roll in the sand, and watch the sunset.
As I tippy-tap this I need to comfort Mom, she has tears in her eyes. They are not tears of sadness but rather, tears of love, respect, admiration, gratefulness, gratitude, and memories. I will remain here with Mom, Marshal Jim, Pax, and the Muppets and oversee EAC as the CED (Chief Executive Dig)!
Best! Life! Ever!

This is a wonderful initiative by @presgang and @sharedbylines to support blind and/or visually impaired emerging journalists. Check out Graham's post below for details.
Writing about my vision loss has lead to a lot of work in TV and journalism. I wanted to pay it forward.
With @sharedbylines I’ve put together a scholarship for blind/visually impaired journalists. The scholarship is for three grand. Apply below.
