I went to another designer meet-up in Melbourne. I was lucky to connect with 4 local designers instead of being awkward the entire time.🤩
I think it was mostly because the group was relatively smaller, it gave an introvert like me more time to warm up to the same people.🤔️
I was interviewed by the talent team of a AU-founded company that has remote-first policy. They want to double the talent pool, and have employees both in San Francisco and Sydney.
With better preparation than last time, l'm relatively satisfied with my performance this time!!
Within 25 minutes, she asked me:
1. Tell me about your experience?
2. What’s your visa status?
3. What will you see yourself in 5 years?
4. What make you a good asset to us?
5. What’s your salary expectation?
She will pass my info to hiring manager, and hear from them next Wed. – at Melbourne, Victoria
I was interviewed by an American company that set up an office in Canada from Australia. How International it was😅?
In short, I messed up with lots of stuttering and anxiety. And I wasn't expecting them to talk to me😱
Attending my 1st in-person meetup in Melbourne today.
Awkwardly talking to strangers in my field. What can I say🤦🏻♂️I’m clumsy as f* Feeling like no one will remember me after this🥶
Could anyone share some tips on how you usually approach people? – at Melbourne, Victoria
This is actually very interesting😂😂 Designers rarely use pitch white.
Based on what I know, it's a bit unnatural to use them since everything in the real world are rarely pitch black or white🤔.

Designer: This design will only takes 2 days to complete💪🏼!!!
PM: That's fast, nice~
(1 week later)
Designer:…shit
The gap between planning in mind and design in mockups. Visualization is really a hard skill. I guess that's why I'm a UX/UI designer instead of a UI/UX today😂.
In where I'm from, designers are often viewed as “art labor” as that's the most visible thing we do🥶.
When we make products so intuitive”, products look so easy that people start thinking our work is also easy 🤦🏻♂️.
I'm wondering how's your function treated in your country?
Last week, I helped review an amazing London based full-stack developer Adam (@csturner88) 's portfolio from the UX/UI's POV. Adam surprised me by coding every change within 2 days!!!
He was very keen on details and strived to build everything perfectly according to mockups 🙌.
A week ago I had a friendly consultation with an extremely talented Melbourne based UI/UX designer - Wayne Hsu (@wayne_h99) regarding my developer portfolio.
Wayne took time to review my old portfolio design, goals and target audience from a UX first perspective.
He considered factors such as target customer psychology, visual cues, clarity of typography and copy.
Wayne quickly designed a very sharp and highly enhanced take of my old portfolio, leaving me with a well annotated Figma file to work from, which I developed within a few days.
I am very pleased with Wayne Hsu's work!
Please see the comments for a link to the finished product.
If you are connected with me, I'd encourage you to also connect and introduce yourself to Wayne. 👋
He is currently looking for new UI/UX opportunities in the Melbourne, Australia area.

I analyzed some highly praised developers' portfolios to identify needs:
• Recruiters: Quick impression on skill sets & CV (30s).
• Hiring managers: Easy Github access (120s).
I included some of my thoughts about the portfolio enhancement:
Due to differing portfolio purposes between developers & designers, designer's way of presenting work won't be helpful for developers.
This is definitely a neat trick designers would like to pick up soon on Figma🤩.
In the past, it drove every designer crazy moving all components to "manually fit🤮" every screen size.
🎨 How to structure @Figma variables in your design system
Create 4 collections:
1️⃣ Base colors (primitives)
2️⃣ Color tokens (semantic colors)
3️⃣ Number tokens (spacing & border radius)
4️⃣ Devices

App: Do you want to "Delete" or "Cancel" your account?
Me😱: ..No...I don't. Delete!?I Cancel!?
Wordings are always a tricky part in the UX. Sometimes designers have to break the patten to communicate correctly, like changing the "cancel" to "No, I don't/Not yet"
