Another edition of why we prefer KPLC over KenGen The KPLC–KenGen decoupling is continues. For years these two moved in lockstep on the NSE: Then the market started front-running KPLC's FY24 numbers, and when the results dropped in October 2024 (a KES 30bn profit from a KES 3.2bn loss, plus the first dividend in seven years), the pair stopped moving together. Back in June 2024, KPLC was at KES 1.66 with a negative P/E off a loss-making year, while KenGen sat around KES 2.40 at roughly 3x trailing earnings. Fast forward to today: KPLC is at KES 23.45 on a ~1.8x P/E and KenGen is at KES 10.80 on ~6.9x. That's a 14x for KPLC versus about 4.5x for KenGen. The kicker is that KPLC still trades cheaper on earnings than KenGen does. KenGen's move came from its multiple re-rating, while KPLC's came from its earnings going from a loss to a KES 25bn profit.

Kenya Power is the most mispriced stock in the NSE energy sector, and this chart shows why: $KPLC earned a 20.7% ROE in FY26, the highest in the peer set by a wide margin. KenGen earns 3.6%, TotalEnergies 8.0%, Kenya Pipeline 10.0%. Yet KPLC trades at just 0.35x book value. Kenya Pipeline, earning half the return, trades at 1.7x. Normally, higher returns on equity command a higher price-to-book. KPLC breaks that relationship completely.

Equity and KCB trade at almost the same earnings multiple. 4.54x against 4.35x. Underneath, they are not the same bank. ROE: 27.3% vs 21.1% NPL ratio: 9.5% vs 15.1% Non-funded income: 45% vs 31.5% of total Jaws: +7.46% vs +3.76% Equity earns six percentage points more on every shilling of shareholder capital, does it with a loan book carrying a third fewer bad loans, and funds nearly half its income from fees rather than lending spread. Its costs are also growing slower than its revenue, and by a wider margin. The market is charging a 4% premium for that. KCB's answer is price. At 0.88x book against Equity's 1.2x, you are buying the weaker balance sheet at a discount to what it says it is worth. It is clear which banking sector stock deserves to be trading at a steep premium to book value

TPS Eastern Africa experienced a challenging first half of 2026, marked by its loss for the period worsening significantly by 315.5% to 66.38 Mn. Revenue from contracts with customers dipped marginally by 1.4% to 4.00 Bn, which, combined with flat operating expenses and an 8.9% rise in depreciation and amortisation, resulted in a 4.2% drop in operating profit to 517.14 Mn. The deepened bottom-line deficit was heavily driven by a massive 2053.0% surge in the share of loss from associate companies to 119.64 Mn, effectively wiping out the benefits of a 52.6% reduction in net finance costs. Consequently, the loss per share deteriorated to (0.12). Examining the balance sheet against FY 2025, total assets contracted by 2.9% to 21.58 Bn and total equity dipped 2.4% to 13.04 Bn, though the company did manage to improve its end-of-period cash and cash equivalents by 18.4% to 922.10 Mn.

The balance sheet also showed robust health, as total assets increased by 15.1% to 1.83 Bn and total equity grew 35.1% to 1.12 Bn, while total liabilities dropped by 6.8%.
