Last week I celebrated 5 years sober! Nothing magical happened when I stopped drinking, but I'm grateful my kids have never met me drunk. I'm the sort of person who has a hard time knowing when to stop, and I'm very happy I was able to learn to not start. Cheers!

I've been sober for two or so years. My life wasn't in shambles, but it certainly feels like there was a ~20% improvement in my capabilities that seems to compound yearly

My cousin died when she hit a tree after swerving to miss a deer. My friend Aaron died in high school when he had a diabetic siezure driving to work. They would probably both be alive if we had this technology back then. I miss them.

I don't care if I sound like a shill, my Tesla is amazing Every drive is just, wow, the car is driving Soon drunk driving manslaughter will be over. Text-and-drivers, geriatric loons on the wrong side of the road, road ragers, just gone, a historical problem

parents the world over today are forcing their children into misguided rat races for some status ladder that almost certainly won’t exist by the time they come out the other side. the world is changing rapidly. let them put down their grinding and keep their wits about them

I think there should be more shame directed at public schools that fail so badly that people would rather pay to go somewhere else than attend them for free.

there is literally no amount of shaming that would make me willing to send my children to a school that is unsafe or cannot serve them. Try building a school that is safe and can serve them.

I will never forget the terror I felt, seven months pregnant, and my toddler son on the ground with our neighbor's persistently angry pit bull out of his yard walking toward and growling at my son. I don't remember thinking anything...just making myself big and in a deep voice saying GO HOME. Caught my useless neighbor's attention at least and they ran out and drug him back in their yard. This is exactly the type of owner this man was saying shouldn't have a dog like this.

Australia’s biggest telco had a network outage last week because they didn’t replace a time server costing $30,000. My Facebook marketplace recommended this to me today. Pure gold.

chuds pretend not to understand this, but when the question is ‘are hot women lucky?’ suddenly the concept is perfectly clear
this is an argument i will never get. "it's deserved" i didn't do shit to get born here. it's not deserved. it's luck. and most people are unlucky as hell

it's actually related to that one anti natalist post and the discourse around it today for the longest time I didn't get why the servant who hid his talent was *sinning* it seemed like a neutral act to me; he was just scared! what if he'd lost it! kind of a pussy sure but is that a sin? and I think the answer actually is yes acting via avoidance of an unwanted outcome is like a kind of dead existence it's just turning and walking into a wall suicide in life my grandma used to say "anxiety is a sin" and I thought that was so mean, and hypocritical because she was terribly anxious but I think I get her point now god said "let there be" things are supposed to keep going; we are supposed to use what we have boldly

Believing we can turn arbitrary polities into democracies was dumb Believing we can't greatly alter the incentives of country leaders chanting "death to America" was equally dumb

actually, seriously, a fantastic gift you can offer your child
Is it ACTUALLY true that it’s good for me to let my baby entertain himself, or is it just selfishness because I can be doing something else while he plays? Tell the truth

this is correct. through the magic of rhetoric you can fit almost any parenting behavior wherever you want on the spectrum of coddling to tyrant based on what flatters your self-image. very little actionable parenting "advice" out there as a result.

Our sweet Sol has taken a turn for the worse in the NICU. We're lucky we got a few days with him off of breathing tubes--to nurse and play and snuggle--but now he's so sick we're not even able to hold him. We would love your prayers for wise King Solomon, our sweet baby.
