users: Discord sucks because it’s not on search engines and I don’t want to join a server and it’ll become lost media
Discord: ok we’ll make public servers indexed and searchable
users: 😡
If you've ever searched for a specific speedrun trick, someone has likely already answered it in a channel somewhere, in one of 63,000 Discoverable Servers. We’re updating Discoverable Servers to make those answers easier to find. View article
The Internet: "Discord is a giant information black hole, we miss forums"
Discord: *lets messages on large public instances be indexed by search engines*
Also The Internet(???): "STOP NO WHAT ARE YOU DOING 😡"
?????
Ah fuck I just unknowingly stole Lucia Scarlet's tweet on this, didn't I. xitter.cf/luciascarlet/status/21…
So even though Meta drummed up a few headlines about that last year, the results put out by Google didn't really change much, if at all. I suspect much the same will end up happening with large Discord instances too.
Good news, after a longer than planned outage at the hands of the PHP2Shell security emergency this time last week, the Team Fortress Wiki is back online.

This is a load of hogwash. Plenty of people use other options than Steam. Linux users had to create their own just to use EGS via Heroic, for example, because Epic shit on Linux users for decades! Now there's money to be made and all of a sudden they want to jump on the Linux train after Valve's & community contributor's hard work at making it viable. All the while complaining about anti-competition. No, Epic just *sucks* and we don't want anything to do with it. We laughed when Square made FF7R EGS exclusive! And Square paid for that poor decision.
"PC gamers only want one interface to launch games from!" Say hello to Lutris! Or PlayOnLinux! Or Heroic!
Did Epic ever bankroll Linux GPU driver devs? No.
Did Epic ever support various input devices on Linux? No.
Did GOG ever support Linux? No.
Did Valve? Yes! Did Valve also make it easy to remap and use your own controllers, even other brands like Sony? Yes! Did Valve fund and make it easier for Linux users to run Windows games on their Linux machines? Yes! Did Valve hire small time guys who made DXVK, who were doing it just for fun and probably would've continued anyway? Yes!
Did *any* of the others try to make the PC gaming experience *better* ?? NO!
Guess what? There's other options Linux (and PC gamers & indy devs!) users have been using like itch.io.
Instead of being a little, disgusting weasel and trying to bring down a competitor through whining and crying, why don't you lot make a *better* service and product?
P.S. I will *never* use your service or brand because your company went out of their way for *decades* to screw the platform I chose.
I'm gonna spell this out because this issue is deceptively subtle:
1. The Steam client and infrastructure is somewhere between "not that hard" and "trivial". It's a download service attached to a payment processor with a smattering of services on the side. Cloud providers handle all the infrastructure these days.
2. Steam takes 30% of gross revenue; ostensibly for the privilege of using these services, but in reality it is purely to get access to the massive Steam userbase.
3. Steam users love Steam and having their whole library in one place. It works. It's dependable. It has sales and cards and achievements, oh my!
4. PC developers have no option but to distribute through Steam or lose the vast majority of sales. Not releasing on Steam destroys the business model.
5. Therefore, no amount of competition will ever unseat Steam. People post-hoc rationalize this with memes about how gracious Gabe is. And how brilliant their services are. But realistically, no avid Steam user wants other stores to succeed.
The mere existence of other stores risks splintering their precious collection. They are "all in" on Steam. Invested.
Even if an alternative were objectively better, by whatever metric you care about, it would still be of no interest to Steam users. They would in fact find it to be a problem and a threat to their investment.
Competition in this space is not only uninteresting to most Steam users, it's actively denigrated!
The CONSEQUENCE of this situation, is that 30% of all gross revenue is siphoned out of the PC games industry into a black hole.
It doesn't recirculate into studios.
It doesn't pay any bonuses.
It doesn't fund any sequels or DLC.
This is a particularly insidious tax because it's well hidden. It's a second order effect. Most Steams users don't know, and the few that do never consider the aggregate effect this has on their favorite hobby.
It's undeniable that, at this point in history, Valve could EASILY lower the distribution fee while maintaining healthy margins. But they don't have to.
Users are locked into Steam and therefore developers are stuck paying 30% of gross revenue to Valve.
The irony is that Steam users, the very ones maintaining this unbreakable stalemate, would benefit the most from a better financed game development ecosystem.
I don't think this is fixable. It's just sad.
Not the USGov (and one of the more unlikeable USGov entities) unironically calling something "Fake and Gay" 💀 xitter.cf/ICEgov/status/21147941…
Fake & Gay!
Moussa Diawara, the Malian national featured in this shockingly poorly researched @60Minutes report, now faces allegations of immigration FRAUD after his asylum application surfaced, revealing that he claimed to be a HOMOSEXUAL man who feared persecution in Mali.

Bonus, the USGov also going after one of Ronald McDonald Trump's buddy's Skydance's IPs as part of it too 💀
(Not that I really give a shit otherwise about whatever the hell it is they're screaming about, but still, funny juxtaposition that they're going at Bari Weiss' people.)
Sorry to leave this to the last week, but these are the implementation details for how permanent DST is going to be handled. This will also be linked below RHI sections for a time to ensure everyone is aware what is up. xitter.cf/wickedplayer494/status…
