Game Freak programmer Fumiya Narita and University of Tokyo professor Takashi Kanai have unveiled a new technique for making water simulations much faster without sacrificing visual quality. The method, called Extended Quadtree Tall Cells, combines two previous techniques to reduce the amount of computation needed for detailed water effects. In tests, it delivered: -2.5–3x faster pressure calculations -Around 1.5x faster overall simulation -Fewer grid cells while keeping water visuals largely intact -Strong results in scenes with lots of small waves, such as rain The technique still has some limitations, including higher memory usage and reduced benefits in calmer water scenes. The researchers have not confirmed whether the techwill be used in a future Pokémon game.
