📢 My op-ed in @thehill is out:
The piece answers a paradox: many Uyghurs overseas continue to deal with detained relatives & transnational repression.
Meanwhile, some non-Uyghurs may assume the situation has improved, as the re-education camps are no longer in global headlines

Behind every political prisoner is a human story—a family separated, a voice silenced, a courageous life interrupted.
On Friday, 10/30, we will gather at the Lincoln Memorial to speak their names, honor their courage, and stand with those fighting for their freedom.
Join us at 5 PM.

Just think of how many #humanrights crimes—by those purged and those doing the purging—go unaddressed under #China #XiJinping.

Today, one of China’s most famous political prisoners, the Uyghur economist Ilham Tohti, turns 57, in jail.

Today, like on so many other days, Ilham Tohti, the Uyghur intellectual, professor and businessman, spends his day in one of China's prisons. For serving his people. It is his 57th birthday. May he see freedom soon!

Thinking of María Corina Machado as she returns to Venezuela, and wishing her safety and strength. Her courage and steadfast leadership in the effort to restore democracy reflect the aspirations of millions of Venezuelans.
At @NEDemocracy, we stand with Venezuelans working peacefully to restore democracy, the rule of law, and fundamental freedoms—a future in which there are no political prisoners and all can speak freely, participate without fear, and choose their leaders through free and fair elections.
Yet another important internal document from the #Uyghur region corroborating crimes against humanity
We've translated and posted a fairly important and high-level internal police report from Urumqi (dated July 2018): shahit.biz/reportcont.php?re…
It details the detentions and repression in higher education specifically, including the suicide of a school director. (1/11)

785,000 Georgians voted for groups now facing a ban.
The issue is bigger than any party or politician. Democracy depends on citizens having a genuine choice—& the ability to change their government peacefully.
Political competition is a democratic right, not a privilege granted by those in power.

The Uyghur Times Reddit account was hacked and terminated, and its username was changed to “Disastrous-End-4540” (4540 means “I am dead, I am dead” in Chinese culture and internet slang: 是我死了,是我死了). All content published on the account over the past five years, along with the followers we had gained, has disappeared entirely. Reddit has not responded to our emails or requests to recover the account.
@Reddit @Reddit_Support , do you want to Disastrous-End to Uyghur Times ?

WLC’s Political Prisoners Support Team Co-Director @bertavalle joined a panel hosted by the National Endowment for Democracy (@NEDemocracy), during a ceremony honoring U.S. Representative @MarioDB -with its 2026 Champion of Freedom Democracy Award.
Berta highlighted WLC’s global efforts to defend political prisoners, the importance of international pressure for their release, and the practical tools developed to support those confronting authoritarian repression.
She also met with Cuban political prisoners and former detainees, reaffirming WLC’s commitment to those still behind bars and those rebuilding their lives after imprisonment.
Freedom is indivisible. Wherever a dictatorship holds a hostage, the fight for their release is our fight.

In a time of increasing global volatility, do people still strive to be in a democracy? @DCTwining, whose work as president of the @IRIglobal takes him around the world, believes that is still a universal human aspiration.
“Everywhere we go, people are wanting to express themselves, to have voice, to have democratic dignity, to build out civic space, to be free,” he said onstage at the Chicago Council Conference Center last night.

Watch this, please. What a remarkable, courageous, and kind person. His admiration for the unarmed teacher who took on the shooter shines through. Please pray for him. He's carrying a lot -- there is such a cost to taking a life, even when it's necessary.
Bend, Oregon man who shot and killed a shooter at his daughters' school speaks out, praises female teacher for fighting the shooter, allowing him to have a clear shot.
Kaylub Giamanco says he is haunted by the sound of children pleading for their lives.
He also praised the teacher for grabbing the gunman's weapon, allowing him to take a shot at the shooter.
"I want to recognize [the teacher]. She gave me the opportunity to make my shot without losing my life..."
"I swung the door open, and I stepped in, and I fired, and they dropped to the ground... I looked down at the gunman, and he was scrambling for his weapon. And I looked at him, and I shot him 2 more times..."

Ren Zeping (任泽平), the famous Chinese economist and online commentator, is trending on Weibo after his WeChat account was suddenly restricted from gaining new followers today due to a platform violation.
His account is still up (任泽平宏观), but seems to be shadowbanned as well.
Ren's last post before the ban was a post titled "The Market Has Bottomed Out, and a Rebound Is Underway." In the post, he stressed pressure on the Chinese economy, weak domestic demand, and declining consumption and investment, but emphasized that AI & leading domestic tech companies are the main opportunities going forward.
But it's completely unclear whether that analysis, or any of the hundreds of other posts on his account, got him in trouble this time.
One WeChat blogger commented, "If such a badass analyst can't even figure out which of his own writing got him banned, then just how seriously should we take him?"
But another Weibo account shared their experience of just how unpredictable it can be, as their accounts across all platforms were also muted during Covid: "Honestly, even now, I have no idea what the supposed standards are for running an independent social media account. To put it bluntly, I don’t know whether my account will still be here tomorrow, or whether something I posted in the past will be dug up and used to hold me accountable."
Ren was previously banned from posting on his Weibo account in 2022 for proposing that the central bank set up a $314 billion “fertility fund” to encourage people to have more babies.
