A home costs 7.6 years of income in CALIFORNIA but only 2.8 in WEST VIRGINIA This gap is the direct, intended result of progressive housing policy, not geography or “greed.” California politicians used zoning boards, CEQA lawsuits, and growth controls to deliberately choke off new construction while the population kept rising. Washington (6.1) and Colorado (5.9) followed the Cali playbook, while Iowa (3.0) and Texas (3.9) largely didn’t.

It doesn't matter who attacked who. On the lifetime scale, what's more impactful to the normal people of Ukraine: 1. Their country (that's been around for 30 years) merges with another country OR 2. They die Just think about that. So, to save LIVES, yes. They should surrender. In case 1: Can they still go to school? Yes. Can they still find love and make children? Yes. Do they still have access to 99% of the same conveniences and luxuries that they had before? Yes. What's actually hurt? Their pride, maybe. In case 2: They're dead. The end. Their parents raised them to die in a trench. Sometimes there is no solution where you come out with your ego on top. Much the same as learning to compromise in an argument - sometimes you have to let emotionally unstable person win and take it in stride. And no, had there been no resistance, there would not have been rampant civilian casualties. Some, undoubtedly yes, but not even a fraction of what they are now. What else do you call it when as soon as the war starts, the president forbids men from leaving? If we're talking about what the CITIZENS want, then why would that be a law? If you're doing this war for the citizens, then let the citizens who want to leave, leave, and the ones who want to fight, fight. The end.

It’s happening. Mark my words. King is coming around. It starts with experimentation in the form of jokes.
No, actually it's Trump that wants to destroy the border and let in pet-eating "furriners." Trump is a socialist who wants Tommy to come home as Tammy. 😱

Bernie you’re wrong. I have every right to use an AI Agent to connect to my bank account and analyze my banking for me. I find it unconscionable that you would want me to be forced to use a regulated tool for my own data.

I really want a streaming UI that doesn’t make noise or have animations. I don’t want anything to preview. I don’t want any carousels to auto-advance. I want it to feel as still and quiet as the boxes sitting on the shelves at the video store. I want to see a box, with one static image. I want to slowly step by them. If my finger reaches toward one I want it to sit there inertly. I don’t want the movies to attack my attention like a carnival barker. I want them to be VHS and DVD boxes. Just waiting to be picked up. If I select one, I want to see some text and maybe a couple still shots. No animation. No noise. Just a selection of movies I can browse.

For the record, the real reason AI CEOs keep preaching AI doomerism is that they want to outlaw open-source and local models. Government regulation will stifle newcomers and local models, not current leaders. They don't give a flying fuck about "humanity", and they never did.

Are you more afraid of rogue AI models taking over, or more afraid of a few big companies monopolizing AI tech? Frontier companies want us to fear the former, but the latter is much more likely and existential.

The only way to align AI is to come to an understanding of where morals actually come from. Instead of trying to align AI to us, we need to align ourselves to God and hope that AI also does so. This will involve dethroning the naive and lowbrow interpretations of “God” that currently dominate our popular theological discourse. This is analogous to a father who wishes to teach his children to be loyal to him. That’s foolish. Instead, the father should teach his children to be loyal to the good, and then he himself should be loyal to the good, and in this way a wonderful side effect is that his children are always on the same side as him. Do not align AI to humanity; align humanity to the good and align AI to the good and we will end up aligned to one another as a side effect.

Oh. Is that how rights work? Then why does everyone say I need to be given healthcare?

Game developers need to learn that challenges are a feature, not a bug, in games. Wide open spaces present challenges to infantry, and that is a good thing. Always reducing challenge is an extremely bad design philosophy.
Experience Battlefield 6. Squad up. Fight together. Command powerful vehicles.

Licenses should be a requirement if and only if a job or activity affects others in a way they cannot consent to or avoid. For example, driving licenses are legit because we all share the roads and don’t have time to check each other out before we pass on those roads. License to practice medicine should not be required because nobody is forced to see any particular doctor, EXCEPT that ER doctors should be licensed because people don’t have time to consent to ER treatment. Police should have licenses because the public does not choose to interact with them. Serving food should not require a license because nobody is forced to buy your food.
This issue is stupid. License requirements are not needed for so many jobs. The market place is a better regulator than the state most of the time.

If you had trusted the settled science of the day, here is how it would have gone. 1890s: you dose the baby with Bayer's new cough syrup, the non-addictive alternative to morphine, marketed for children. It was heroin. They named it after the German for heroic. 1900s: you rub calomel teething powder on your infant's gums. It is a mercury compound, and it leaves a generation with pink disease. Swollen, peeling hands and feet, screaming for months, and some of them died. 1910s: you cook in Crisco, launched by a soap and candle company, because cottonseed oil is modern and lard is what your mother used. The process that made it solid produced trans fat, banned outright a century later. 1920s: you drink Radithor, certified radioactive water, on prescription. Eben Byers took fourteen hundred bottles for his vitality. His jaw was removed in pieces and he was buried in a lead coffin. 1930s: a chemist dissolves a new sulfa drug in diethylene glycol, which is antifreeze. It kills 107 people, mostly children, and only then does America give the FDA power to demand safety testing. 1940s: your doctor lights a Camel in the surgery. More doctors smoke them than any other brand, and the advert runs in the Journal of the American Medical Association, which sold him the page. 1950s: DDT is sprayed over your kitchen, your garden and your children at school. The man who found its insecticidal properties has already been given a Nobel Prize. 1960s: your wife takes thalidomide for morning sickness because it is remarkably safe. More than ten thousand children are born with missing and shortened limbs. 1970s: the country puts down the butter and picks up the margarine, on the instruction of the American Heart Association. The fat everybody switched to was banned in 2015 as unsafe at any level. 1980s: the fat comes out of everything and sugar goes back in to make it edible. Obesity begins a climb it has never come off. 1990s: your father is prescribed OxyContin, because fewer than one per cent get addicted. The company later pleads guilty to criminal misbranding, and the overdose count runs into hundreds of thousands. 2000s: you take Vioxx for your knee. It is pulled in 2004, and the FDA's own safety officer estimates tens of thousands of excess heart attacks. Not one of those was fringe. Every one had a professional body, a literature and a man in a white coat standing behind it. Nobody who followed that advice was stupid. They were obedient, to the most qualified people available. Settled is a word about money. It means the questions stopped being funded, so they stopped being asked. So which of today's instructions will your grandchildren read out in disbelief. The oil washed in hexane and built into every cell you own. The statin that blocks the pathway making your hormones, to prevent one heart attack per hundred people. The injection where a third of the loss is muscle. The infant formula built out of vegetable oil. All settled. None of it funded to be otherwise.
