“What we’re seeing is a classic chilling effect, whether intended or not,” says Jeremi Suri, a professor in the Department of History and the LBJ School of Public Affairs. “This is what happens when people become concerned that what might have been acceptable or protected yesterday won’t be protected tomorrow.” texasmonthly.com/news-politi…

* The West is only bankrupt because of a problem of redistribution. Thomas Piketty: savageminds.co/p/billionaire…? "To justify the inadequacy of education funding, and in particular the decrease in spending per student, the government and its supporters argue that France cannot afford to invest more. They are making two reasoning errors. Public debt has indeed risen from 20% of GDP in 1970 to 120% today. But at the same time, private wealth has grown much more dramatically: It has gone from 300% to 600% of GDP, with extreme concentration among the wealthiest financial fortunes. In other words, France’s national wealth—the sum of private and public assets minus private and public debts—has never been so high, not only in absolute terms but also as a percentage of GDP (which itself has never been higher). In other words, France has never been richer. The problem to solve is simply one of distribution."

If you ever used KYC you can go to jail now. This girl is facing 6 years in jail because criminals bought her KYC data on darknet, opened accounts with it, and used it for crime. She just passed a KYC for a regular platform and the provider leaked all the info of all users. it's now on darknet. There's a big chance your data has been leaked somewhere sometime, sold on darkweb for dirt cheap. So be carful doing KYC anywhere, from now on. current KYC and aml practices are CANCER that don't prevent the actual money launderers (government adjacent), but just hurt regular people
This story shows how hilariously broken online identity verification is from all relevant angles. 1. Your SSN, DOB, address history, etc. are sitting in countless data breaches and data-broker dumps. They’re cheap and widely available to basically anyone who looks. 2. KYC/AML mostly just checks that the data exists and matches a real person. It doesn’t confirm the person signing up is actually the real person behind that identity. Result: Amanda Smith spent three nights in jail and now faces up to six years in prison over a $1,000 CashApp scam account opened with her SSN and DOB. It wasn't necessarily opened by her, and the phone, IP, device, address, and other details don’t match. The funniest (and yes, saddest) part is CashApp wouldn't give her information about the account because she can’t prove she’s the owner. Her personal info was good enough to open the account, but not good enough to access it in the future, apparently. To be clear, CashApp is likely just following the law here. Anyway, we need to burn it all down and start fresh.

In 1938, FDR warned the Nation that “a concentration of private power without equal in history” was growing in our midst. Today, I discovered that the concentration of private power he faced was NOTHING compared to the concentration we face today. In 1930, the largest 0.1% of American business firms controlled 47% of the country’s business assets. In 2013, the largest 0.1% of firms controlled 88% of business assets. That is bonkers. There is no way we can maintain anything resembling political democracy — let alone free enterprise — with such few hands gripping essentially all of the economic power in the country. In 1938, FDR predicted that “the liberty of a democracy will not be safe as long as the people tolerate the growth of private power to a point where it becomes stronger than their democratic government itself.” “That, in its essence,” he said, “is Fascism — ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power.” A few years later, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) conducted its own investigation into the concentration of economic power and found that the “dead hand of corporate control” had displaced free, private enterprise in most of the Nation’s basic industries. As a result, the FTC issued a stark warning to the country: “[A] definite choice has to be made,” the FTC said. “Either this country is going down the road to collectivism” and fascism, “or it must stand and fight for competition as the protector of all that is embodied in free enterprise.” That generation of Americans — the Greatest Generation that rose from the ashes of the Depression to beat Hitler, end Jim Crow, and bring about the most prosperous era in the Nation’s economic history — chose to fight. And they won. If American democracy is going to survive the critical moment we’re going through today, we need to relearn the wisdom of that New Deal generation — and act on it — fast. Like the Greatest Generation did in their time, we have to find “practical controls” over the “blind economic forces” and the “blindly selfish men” of our time. Like our forbears did on the eve of the Second World War, our task is nothing less than to rebuild “a way of living in which political democracy and free private enterprise serve and protect each other — to ensure a maximum of human liberty not for a few but for all.”

It’s the Gulf dead zone from farm chemicals. Fertilizers create a 5000 mi.² dead zone from algae blooms & die offs. There’s no oxygen so there’s no food. And they probably sense the drop and turn around so they don’t die. So we can use ethanol to destroy our engines of course.

WTF, $3000 Samsung TV has an always-on mic, automatic content recognition, geo tracking, network mapping, and ships your data to Samsung + 400 partners. Bro Rooted a brand-new 2025 Samsung TV after noticing absurdly targeted ads. Firmware was locked down, so zero-days it was. Got a root shell. then found: always-on voice service, ACR, geo, full telemetry pipeline, and four separate DRM systems. This isn’t a bug, It’s the product bro.

This is an outcome of the same economy causing climate change, by the way.

GM announced a plan to do $20 billion in share buybacks... and the United Auto Workers is justifiably very upset. UAW President Shawn Fain condemned the buyback as "outrageous." The union says 4 out of 5 autoworkers at GM lack pensions or retiree healthcare and says that the money should benefit workers. Profits generated BY the workers are being funneled AWAY from the workers and straight to Wall Street instead of basic long-term retirement safety nets. And let's not forget how US taxpayers funded GM's $50 billion bailout. At $20 billion, this buyback authorization is roughly 27% to 28% of GM's entire market cap. This is one of the largest share buyback mandates in Detroit's history.

New: We found cops who kept using Flock to spy on women after they left the force. One used it for five years after retirement, spying on his wife during a custody battle. Another ran searches while he was suspended (and later fired) after killing a 15-year-old boy. 🧵
