Please forgive the graininess of this enlargement for our latest Bowie Reflection. It’s from one of David James’ on-set stills of Bowie as Thomas Jerome Newton on the set of The Man Who Fell To Earth in 1975. Here’s the caption from the reverse of the uncropped photo: “Mary-Lou (CANDY CLARK) tries to break down formal barriers between herself and Thomas Jerome Newton (DAVID BOWIE) when she invites him into her bathroom.” The second image we’ve used is of David Bowie’s original artwork (see signature bottom right), a collage he created utilising two other stills from the same scene. If you’re unfamiliar with it, this artwork first appeared as a full-page image in the 1976 ISOLAR tour programme. (See last image) Look closely at Bowie’s reflection and the bubbles in the bath. A bit of pre-Photoshop scalpel work by Bowie. Thankfully the replacement of the bubbles with Linoleum by David keeps us on the right side of social platform censors. The original images were a little more revealing. #BowieReflections
