Now out from paywall. Privatisation turned our gentailers into cash cows that paid $10.8 billion in dividends in the last decade while increasing generating capacity by 1%. This is now destroying manufacturing employment. Nothing to do with offshore gas. newsroom.co.nz/2024/08/23/el…

Perhaps @FIRST_Union could amend their strike notice so members can dress up as Scrooge McDuck to more accurately represent their employer.
It’s a bit… *cringe* for #Woolworths to ask supermarket workers to pay for, create and dress up in Disney costumes for a promotion this week while nearly 10,000 staff are currently on strike... rnz.co.nz/news/business/5250…

@woolworths your staff have just taken this extraordinary step in going to the people with their plight. Shame on @Woolworths for not paying the Living Wage. My groceries were delivered with this note in each bag. Please share, Kiwis. This is outrageous.

On the left are monthly wholesale electricity prices. August only has a few days data (maybe it'll come down?) On the right we can see the collapse of gentailer investment post-privatisation vs their dividend payments over that period. I wonder if there's any connection here.

Oji announces 75 likely redundancies at their Penrose site, driven by surging electricity prices. For every dollar of investment by our gentailers in the past decade, they've paid $2.41 in shareholder dividends. Privatisation is a disaster. rnz.co.nz/news/business/5243…

If Foodstuffs wants to be "one national business" it needs to centrally bargain wages and conditions across the entire group. There are currently dozens of collective agreements, and the majority of employees fall outside their coverage. If Woolworths can, why not Foodstuffs?
