Emancipation Day is generally observed on August 1, marking the date in 1834 that the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833 came into effect across the British Empire, including Canada.
This day recognizes the strength, perseverance, and resistance of Black communities who fought – and continue to fight – for freedom and justice.
Celebrated by many communities across Canada since the 19th century, Emancipation Day was officially designated by Ontario’s provincial government in 2008 and the federal government in 2021.
