I’ve seen DIGGER. It’s brilliant, maximalist filmmaking. Very on the nose, but bursting with ideas…never holds back. Many secrets too. A tree falls. A nephew lurks. Level 4 unlocked. Tom Cruise, Iñárritu and Lubezki go ballistic in this exquisite 10min continuous shot. Whoa!

much of what has been said about "Digger" --both positively & negatively-- suggests that it is a somewhat Brechtian didactic work with little cinematic interest. is this a mistaken assumption?

Big news! I talked to Stephen Pizzello. It’s confirmed. His book “Gordon Willis on Cinematography” is coming out later this year or in 2027. Soderbergh read a digital galley proof.

When Gordon Willis died, I was depressed for a full week. A Hollywood Reporter obit mentioned Stephen Pizzello from @AmericanCine was working on a book. That was May 2014. 11 years on, Soderbergh’s Oct 31 diary entry hints it might finally be out? Must investigate…

Let's apply @TheAcademy's logic, (in relegating 4 categories to commercial breaks) to LAST YEAR'S Oscar ceremony. 1. Cinematography: Roger Deakins finally wins after 13 losses. He gets a standing ovation. "I really love my job. I've been doing it a long time, as you can see."

This decision shows a galling disregard for the craftspeople and filmmakers whose work is just as integral to the success of a film as the stars above the title. The nominees in these categories deserve their moment of recognition on the actual telecast. Do better, @TheAcademy.

Going to a long planned work meeting with one of my heroes. I have the WORST conjunctivitis I’ve ever seen. But this meeting is with me as director and he’s the DP, so no make up f*****d up eyeball is meh. I’m going to try and apply this feeling to every interaction from now on.
