Deep sea life in the Gulf of Mexico (not Gulf of America, Trump!) crashed by 60% following the Deepwater Horizon 4 million barrel oil spill, and 16 years later shows little sign of recovery, new research - based on thousands of samples - shows. e360.yale.edu/digest/deepwat…

A wild story: the CEO of a US energy company whose plans were discussed during the Witkoff-Kushner-Putin negotiations resigns. Why? He learned that his company's main investor is a sanctioned Russian company, not the UAE nytimes.com/2026/10/23/us/po…

Ronan Farrow reported in 2023 that the Pentagon signed a SpaceX contract to keep Musk from being able to cut off Ukraine’s battlefield connectivity at will. Colin Kahl described it as a way to lock in service so Musk couldn’t just flip the switch. WSJ now reports U.S. officials say Musk ordered the Oct. 14 Starshield slowdown anyway, after speaking with Trump. If that reporting holds, the guardrail didn’t hold.
1/3 Musk ordered last week's slowdown of Starshield, which Ukraine fights on, after talking with Trump, per @WSJ. In '23 the Pentagon signed a contract with SpaceX to “prevent Musk from turning off the switch," per fmr Under Sec of Defense Colin Kahl. newyorker.com/magazine/2023/…

The speed limits on Starlink and Starshield are still there. The speed has not been restored. And the delivery of interceptors to protect us against Russian ballistic missiles is still delayed. We’re waiting for interceptors that were already agreed on. But they are still not coming. This is a real problem, because the Russians attack us almost every single day. All of this is happening while we continue our quite successful operations on the front. We keep defending positions. Things have become harder – partly because of the Starlink and Starshield policies and speed limits. But our frontline is still holding and I am proud of how strong our people are. From an address at the Hudson Institute. (2/3)

Trump’s oil deal with Venezuela was negotiated in secret. Now we know why. The contract just leaked, and it doesn’t say what Trump says it says.  What it does say is that we bought 35 percent of a company for a penny a share. The company is run by Alejandro Betancourt, a Venezuelan businessman who’s been investigated for money laundering in Switzerland, Spain, and the United States. DOJ officials reportedly asked foreign governments to close those investigations and let him travel. The parent company is registered through a Barbados shell, so nobody can see who the other owners are. Any dispute goes to a court in Texas. One person involved said it was built to insulate the deal from future administrations. The company pumps about 200,000 barrels a day. America burns through that in 15 minutes. If this were a good deal, they wouldn’t have had to hide it. I break it all down in today’s show (link in reply).

Kaiser is cutting 49 radiologic technologist roles in Northern California, including mammographers, sonographers, and CT and MRI techs, effective Dec 12. First it was the admin layer. Now it's the imaging room. These layoffs come on top of 161 permanent California cuts already in state layoff filings. In March I said Kaiser was shifting from people-driven to system-controlled operations. This is what that looks like when it reaches clinical work. Watch for more small filings, not one big headline.
Kaiser Permanente workforce changes are coming. Healthcare is shifting from people-driven operations to system-controlled operations. December: exits began January: exits accelerated February: inflection period March: hiring flips I expect the layoffs and exits to be across California, Pacific Northwest, Hawaii, and the Mid-Atlantic. Not one headline cut either... but distributed reductions over the next 1–2 quarters. It looks like 2-5K? Admin, HR, Mid-layer. Margin compression is real.
