As you flip your calendars over to september this morning, it's worth considering: what am I gonna do when 2027 rolls around?
Well I've got you sorted: birdmichaelbirdcalendars.big…

this is it, this is my masterpiece, the height of my achievement on earth, this is the one I'll be remembered for😤
"you just gotta win before you have any values" - the guy who simply never wins
Me: "Even if it was unpopular, are you saying the Democratic Party should not speak out against the president sending migrants who have committed no crimes to be tortured in a foreign gulag?"
@mattyglesias: "Yeah."
Me: "Just stay silent?"
Yglesias: "I think that sometimes, if you want to help people... you gotta win first."
Me: "They might be dead in three years time, by the time you win."
Despite all the arguments on this hellsite over the exact number of his Piker tweets, this was the part of my interview with Matthew Yglesias that really stood out to me. I was actually stunned by this response. Shouldn't politics also stand for something more than triangulation, polling and 4-D chess strategizing?

Crazy that the spelling bee format is the funniest comedy setup available and it took a charming kiwi host to figure it out
A couple of excellent suggestions in response to my call out for recent Aus books I'd missed - Driver Driver is dreamy and weird and heavily indebted to David Lynch (complimentary), Either Way You Lose is filled with surreal, bonkers, energetic stories. Both small press, both 👍
Channel-billed cuckoos have historically not made it down to Melbourne in summer, but they are increasingly popping up. My question: how do the ravens and currawongs that live here immediately know they fucken hate these guys? They've never seen them before???
One of the best small US publishers, if only because they publish my favourite Australian writers
The independent publisher Catapult, cofounded in 2015 by Elizabeth Koch, will be acquired by an unspecified buyer and end operations on October 30. The newly formed staff union said it was notified that “continued employment with the prospective buyer is not an option.” buff.ly/f4EapkJ
I'm finally at the point where I can stocktake the last box of calendars and either the printer shipped me 504 calendars instead of 500 or I've fucked something up
Thought I heard a sacred kingfisher calling in the middle of the night last night, but that seems pretty unlikely
I am always jealous of the US radar images of mass bird migrations, so it's thrilling that we've got our own version
