How does funding uncertainty affect science? Every Oct, we get headlines bemoaning the impact of the federal budgeting process on science. Does it matter that grant $$ takes a bit longer to get out the door, or is it just a nuisance we can deal with?

Econ of science folks - this position via FAS is really interesting if you want policy impact. Essentially, it's a metascience/econ of science position embedded quite high up at places like DOE. They allocate *billions* to R&D, w/ big changes due to AI/Genesis/OSTP doc/etc.

These give us level and elasticity differences after a shock. We write a model that uses these to produce a bound on the value of (informal) spousal care: at least $568/day.
That’s ~1.6x the cost of a nursing-home day, ~2.6x a day of paid home care, and >3x median daily earnings

OFFICIAL: An independent Commission has found Manchester City FC guilty of all charges related to serious breaches of the Premier League’s financial rules over a nine-season period, and the majority of charges in relation to its failure to co-operate with the League’s investigation.
The independent Commission found that between Seasons 2009/10 and 2017/18:
- Manchester City arranged ‘sham’ contracts (which misrepresented the true agreement between the parties) with a number of its commercial partners, as well as relying on ‘sham’ agreements with others, to artificially inflate the club’s revenues and reduce its costs
- The club filed misstated accounts and concealed the true state of its finances from its auditors and football regulators
- Manchester City was significantly in breach of both the Premier League’s and UEFA’s spending limits
- During the Premier League’s investigation, Manchester City committed multiple breaches of its duties of co-operation and utmost good faith towards the League (three of the four alleged breaches were upheld)

🚨 New paper thread with a lovely team🚨
Women get smaller research grants!
A big reason why: they ask for less.
Using a novel dataset on the universe of two philanthropic funders, we find that women requested about 5.4% less funding than comparable men.
Dang. this paper finds evidence that mid-level officials in Singapore (and their relatives) benefited from buying property near planned-but-not-yet-announced subway stations, at least till stronger enforcement measures were taken
S$270 milhões no total.
Cargo suficiente pra saber, baixo o bastante pra ninguém olhar.

anyone want to write a defense of the randomistas for @indevmag?

The assignment itself is actually quite simple. Students are all required to pick any paper they want from @JHealthEcon, @AJHE_journal, or @HECJournal
All they have to do is read their paper and then come to my office and talk to me about it for 5-10 minutes.
