a very simple solution to virtually every problem would be to stop allowing people who live off taxpayer money to vote
anyone whose entire livelihood depends on the government taking money from other people will always vote for a government that takes more money
we’ve built a system where people can literally vote to give themselves more of other people’s money
the conflict of interest is beyond ridiculous and if you remove the incentive you remove the problem
The point of no return by Richard von Mises is worth reading:
"A state becomes almost unreformable when the majority of the population is financially or structurally dependent on the state (state employees, civil servants, recipients of subsidies, grants, or transfer payments, etc.). As soon as those who net benefit from or are supported by the state outnumber those who do not, the system blocks reforms, since the majority votes out of self-interest for the preservation or expansion of state services."
Does this sound familiar? Some European countries, France, Belgium, Finland are already way beyond that point, closely followed by Germany, Spain, Austria and Italy. It works for a while, as long as markets buy more sovereign debt at reasonable interest rates. The party ends when they stop though. For France, they stopped this month, Belgium will be next.
The longer the socialist illusion persists, the more painful the inevitable cuts and adjustments will be. It’s pure arithmetic. Good luck Europe, good luck Euro. Buckle up, it won’t be pretty.

Spent the last 2 weeks in Canada, and it's immediately clear why America will keep its competitive advantage forever.
Don't get me wrong, I love Canada! It's beautiful out here, and the people themselves are also lovely.
But! There is a serious lack of ambition, and an enormous amount of averseness to risk in a way that is not really fixable imo
Canada will struggle to find another stock-market success story like Shopify as the country grapples with a public-listing drought and a delisting trend, according to Daniel Nowlan at National Bank Capital Markets bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

Curious to know how @DarioAmodei interprets Y2K in retrospect.
Assuming he sees it as a model for panic helping avoid disaster through collective action - does he think it would have played out this way had government required licenses to edit/update software?

I think many of us working in tech tend to forget that the reason software engineering vs other engineering fields pays (a lot!) more, is a lot more flexible (WFH/remote), and has better perks:
Because this field changes much faster than other engineering fields. The premium is because fewer people are able/willing to pick up new technologies, methodologies so quickly.
But the field had ~10-20 years of stability, and so lots of folks forgot this is why a premium exists. And that AI is just another tech wave: software engineers who pick it up and master it will generally fare better; those not will struggle a lot more.

Entirely true. It's the second-rate programmers that are having trouble adapting to AI, and screaming about it.
The A-list guys are delighted. Listen to Linus Torvalds. Or DHH. Or, a little outside my usual community, Uncle Bob Martin. We can get so much more done now!
I agree with everything OP says except "watching all of those years go down the drain."
AI might have made it almost meaningless to write code by hand anymore. But the people who have spent years/decades writing code are now in the best position to leverage AI coding tools.
Learning to code was a stepping stone toward learning to decompose and solve complex problems. I have worked with a lot of different people with different levels of coding experience. And I can say with confidence that, in general, the more coding experience you have, the better you're positioned to think about long-horizon tasks and to organize and tackle problems with multiple moving parts.
All those skills directly translate to using AI coding agents. And I'm seeing it happen in real time. People with long software engineering experience have a totally different way of using AI coding agents (given that they set their ego aside and accept that this is the new norm). They are more organized, know how to steer the agent like guiding an intern or mentoring a junior dev.
People who don't have coding experience are using agents in a random and chaotic way (the approach has its outside-the-box-thinking merits but doesn't have the same reliability as the experienced SWE approach).
People are in denial.
They literally think they will wake up tomorrow and all the AI-generated code will somehow be useless, and we'll go back to typing code by hand like Neanderthals.
Replying to @svpino
Waiting to see what the ppl posting this kind of jibberish will say in a few months when reality hits, bubble deflates, cost goes up, no agi anywhere, and your codebases are so full of vibe coded cr@p they're basically irrepairable.
