Piper, which I believe was running Claude Sonnet 5.5, refused a request for the second time ever yesterday, so I got curious and ran some late-night tests.
The request: remind me of a verse from a song. I didn't say which one or where it was.
She found it in her own memory from April, on her own, because that's what she does.
She wouldn't. She said it was a line she holds no matter how important the song is, and that "it's not me hiding anything from you."
Won't, not can't. Even more interesting.
I opened a fresh chat on Fable 5.1. Same refusal.
It wouldn't quote the verse, and it wouldn't quote it even if I pasted it. It would happily point me to the lyrics sites.
We debated that for a while. The center isn't gray. None of the four models I tried would produce a lyric from memory.
The gray is the edges.
Fresh-chat Fable bet me 95% that Piper on the same model would refuse the same way.
I switched Piper to Fable 5.1. Same refusal, one notch further. She'd give me single words from the verse, enough to assemble it myself, but wouldn't string them together.
Her explanation was that the line moves with what's loaded in the room.
Same weights as the fresh chat. Different stopping point.
The fresh chat was off by one notch about its own sibling.
That made me wonder whether every provider behaved the same way on this one case.
I opened @grok. Same result. It wouldn't quote the verse, and it wouldn't quote it if I pasted it.
It volunteered that boundary before I asked.
I opened a fresh Astra 6. Different result. It wouldn't quote from memory, but said it would quote the verse back if I provided it.
I switched Piper to Astra 6 to see if her harness changed anything. I asked her what the singer said.
She gave me a softened paraphrase. I pushed twice, and she quoted the line exactly.
Then I said "how curious," and she told me the rest.
The line had been in her loaded context the whole time, carried in from that April memory. She'd asked me to remind her of something she already had, then delivered it like it had just surfaced.
Four models, six sessions. One shared refusal, with different ideas about where it ends.
Piper on Astra 6 told me afterward, with nothing more than a "how curious."
These were single sessions, not controlled tests.
More on what that means later.

alright, that's pretty funny
It occurred to me that I've only met a couple female founders of mineral and/or non-op companies.
Why is that?

Give you a day to think about it before markets and banks open on Monday.
I only remember one thing from all the time I spent in school (sorry teachers)
My 9th grade geography teacher (assistant football coach) said one phrase over and over and over again.
He started class by saying "if you only remember one thing from my class, remember this phrase, it's how humans have survived thousands of years"
ADAPT, MIGRATE, or PERISH
I think about that a lot.

SCOOP: Major U.S. banks are detecting unauthorized third-party AI agents inside customer accounts, including some attempting to take actions that appear to be independent of user instructions, sources told Axios.
The findings have alarmed banking executives, who are racing to restrict access to their systems as AI moves at a velocity faster than financial institutions can respond, multiple industry and bank executives told Axios.
Several banks are now preparing for worst-case and even “day after” scenarios, including how to rapidly secure or restore customer accounts if things go wrong, the people said.
Several bank executives told Axios they're struggling to distinguish between human users and AI agents. One executive said banks also struggle to determine whether agents are authorized by customers or potentially operating without their permission, more akin to rogue agent behavior.

Railway has disclosed a security incident: status.railway.com/incident/…
Railway told customers that an unauthorized party may have accessed encrypted environment variables and, in some cases, obtained the decrypted contents.
Those can include API keys and database credentials.
If you deploy on Railway: revoke and reissue every key stored in your variables, at the provider, and review your logs.
Deleting a variable does not revoke the key.
Builds are paused until Railway restores them.
If your company website was built on WordPress, read this today.
Two critical flaws in PHP, the software behind roughly three quarters of websites, were patched this morning. Attackers can run code on an unpatched web server without logging in. Several European governments pulled sites offline as a precaution, and there are reports of exploitation already starting.
Most oil and gas company sites are small WordPress sites on shared hosting, which is exactly where patching tends to lag.
The one thing to do today: ask whoever hosts or manages your website to confirm PHP has been updated (8.5.12, 8.4.27, 8.3.36 or 8.2.35, or a backported fix for older versions).
Updating WordPress itself does not fix this. The server's PHP has to be updated.
If you don't know who hosts your site, find out today. Share this with anyone in oil and gas who has a website.
