I’ve said it before, but Yoshi’s Island. It’s a good game to be sure, but the screaming baby and lack of traditional Super Mario gameplay and style has just never resonated with me. I wanted a true sequel to Super Mario World, maybe the greatest game ever made. And instead, I got annoying little Mario with Yoshi as his baby sitter 🤔
Still mind boggling what is happening in the Dreamcast home brew scene. I am really looking forward to this!!
This is a real-time screenshot on Dreamcast running at 30 FPS. This may be the most graphically impressive character I have ever seen.
Also yes... I did add jiggle physics to Cortana. You are welcome, @bimbly. Itagaki-san would be proud of the continuing legacy of bouncy bewbies on Dreamcast. Sexy is back in the big Two-Six. Scroll right for video.
DREAMCAST MAGIC
What is it? It's basically Halo: Dreamcast Evolve's own version of the Shenmue Passport. I wanted to showcase the Halo models at their peaky peak and let gamers look up close at all the models in realtime on the Dreamcast. I, myself, was unprepared for what the Dreamcast was able to render. I'm honestly shocked how good this looks.
Here's what I'll say. These are Halo's real Xbox models, whole.
The Dreamcast has no vertex shader, so every single vertex goes through a CPU from 1998. The Xbox looks up a reflection mask per pixel on the visor. The PVR can't, it only takes a colour per vertex. So the visor is cut ahead of time into 4x and then 16x the triangles, and I refit the mask on every new vertex. That drops the error against the Xbox's per-pixel reflection to about a third. Smaller triangles, less lying.
Cortana's chest is two separate springs, one each side, three axes each, underdamped on purpose. Spin her on the D-Pad and let go and... well. That was purely for science. It costs about 150 floating point operations a frame and no video memory. Blue Cortana is Best Cortana.
There's more. A lot more. I'm not telling you everything yet, but that there is an easter egg 3D model hidden in the DREAMCAST MAGIC menu that will be available for the next round of demo testers to find. I am really proud of this port so far.
Oh! We got all new menus, completely revamped. Do you like them? I think they turned out neat.
Maybe don’t spend half a billion dollars making a video game? 🤔
A source tells Kotaku that Gears of War: E-Day cost over $500 million to make. Sales estimates have been weak despite earning the highest Metacritic score since the original trilogy.
If it was never going to recoup its expenses, maybe it could achieve more as an Xbox console exclusive kotaku.com/the-case-for-excl…
I think this makes sense if you could somehow stream a high end AAA game in 4k at 60fps or whatever, and you didn’t have the hardware to do it yourself. Otherwise, I don’t see the appeal of this at all.
Xbox Cloud Gaming introductory launch pricing revealed:
-10hrs for $3.99
-25hrs for $7.99
-50hrs for $11.99

once you start playing older games you begin to understand that graphics were never as important as gameplay
This is a pretty easy explanation. Back in the 80s, you could create a “AAA” game on the NES with a team of under 10 people. Now though? It takes hundreds of them and hundreds of millions of dollars. This is because gamers have become entitled and expect more and more out of their games. All the while whining about the game being “too expensive” when it’s nearly the same price as it was 40 years ago. Go look at the inflation index and get back to me. Big SNES RPGs like Final Fantasy 6 were often $70-80 when they launched.
Meanwhile, the Indie scene is thriving with amazing games being released literally every day, while their contemporaries at these AAA studios are laid off left and right. Indie is the future. AAA can die for all I care. I will always have something amazing to play.

Another one bites the dust.
Electronic Arts feels like the plague. Once they get you, it's only a matter of time before you're dead.
RIP, BioWare

Making a game is art. It’s like an extension of you. I really think it’s one of the most vulnerable things a person can do. You tear off a piece of yourself, hold it up to the world and say, “Here’s what I love, and I hope you love it too”.
Takes balls. Keep it up, indies! ❤️

Let's show a little love to Halo 2's full Cortana model flawlessly running on Dreamcast. Featuring KallistiOS's (almost) free 2XAA.
The Dreamcast really was the biggest “what if” console. But thanks to devoted super fans, we are getting a lot of those questions answered now and seeing what could have been, actually becoming reality. I love it so much!
Hooooooly SHIT. I just came home to Lamb2k1 taking us from slideshow to PLAYABLE AND FUCKING GORGEOUS with his upcoming port of Resident Evil 4 to the Sega Dreamcast!!! GAAAAINZ!!
Here's a direct hardware capture of me playing through to the starting cabin with the first enemy encounter... with settings enabled for high visual fidelity, such as 2x horizontal FSAA and far draw distance.
Evidently Lamb2k1 and his audacious little clankers have been busy AF, starting with him telling them to redo all of the renderer and math in the port to use my SH4ZAM library to the fullest... which is funny, cuz I just made a few more micro gainz that I have yet to push for some of these commonly used matrix routines!
BUT additionally, he's done some voodo such as:
1) Leveraging a special Katana-like "chunking" model format for the rooms.
2) Precomputing a lot of things up-front for room AI.
3) Culling WAY more aggressively than the GC or PS2 versions were doing.
4) Leon's jacket doesn't update as frequently anymore... lmao!
There's still a LONG ways to go, and it slows down plenty under load, but... WHOAH.
