David Friedberg says the AI war is already here and it does not look like the robot war science fiction promised us. (Save this). The real battle is over who controls intelligence, compute and the digital infrastructure underneath the global economy. Governments may try to regulate the largest frontier labs, but they cannot put open weight models back in the box once their code and weights have been downloaded, copied and modified around the world. The evidence is already overwhelming because tracked downloads of open language models increased from 339 million in March 2025 to more than 2 billion by March 2026. Alibaba’s Qwen alone approached 1 billion downloads, while developers have created countless fine tuned versions that can run privately on local hardware. These models are also becoming extremely capable and Stanford found that the leading closed model was only around 3.3% ahead of the leading open model in March 2026. The gap between the best American and Chinese models had narrowed to just 2.7% and that changes the regulatory problem. A government can control which chips are exported, where large data centers are built and how domestic companies deploy AI but it cannot easily remove model weights that have already spread across thousands of computers and jurisdictions. The next arms race therefore moves toward cybersecurity. Open models give defenders powerful tools for finding vulnerabilities and monitoring networks, but they also make advanced capabilities available to criminals and hostile governments. Microsoft says AI is already accelerating reconnaissance, phishing, malware development and post-breach activity, while agentic systems are beginning to automate larger parts of an attack. The UK’s National Cyber Security Centre expects AI to increase the frequency and intensity of cyberattacks through 2027 but it also warns that AI assisted vulnerability discovery could help attackers exploit weaknesses faster, creating a divide between organizations with modern AI defenses and those that cannot keep up. This is where compute becomes national power. The countries and companies with the largest computing clusters can train stronger models, run more agents, test more vulnerabilities and respond to attacks at a scale smaller players cannot match. The fight is no longer only about who builds the smartest chatbot but rather about who can operate the largest digital army @friedberg

The AI containment debate may already be over. @friedberg argument is that powerful AI is no longer controlled by a handful of American companies running enormous data centers. Open weight models are becoming capable and efficient enough to download, modify, and run on consumer hardware, making the technology nearly impossible to contain once released. The recent launch cycle shows how quickly this is happening. DeepSeek released a faster and cheaper model, Alibaba published downloadable weights for Qwen Image 2.1, and PrismML compressed a 27 billion parameter Qwen model into just 5.9 gigabytes. PrismML says its compressed model retained 98.2% of the original model’s benchmark performance while becoming small enough to run on a laptop or consumer GPU. At the same time, closed model companies continued releasing more capable and affordable systems. Anthropic’s Opus 5.5 reportedly matched its more expensive flagship while costing approximately 40% less to run than its predecessor. Stanford found that the cost of running a model with GPT 3.5 level performance fell more than 280 fold in roughly 18 months. It also found that the performance gap between leading open-weight and closed models narrowed from 8% to 1.7% on some benchmarks in one year. That is the real meaning of Friedberg’s argument. Governments can regulate large data centers, chip exports, and commercial AI providers but they cannot easily remove models that have already spread across the internet and onto personal computers. The debate must therefore shift from whether powerful AI should exist to how it should be used and who becomes responsible when it causes harm.

2) What's astounding is just how much values are going up across the metro area as well. Data on Reventure is showing some ZIP codes up 12% in value over the last year. That's "boom" level price growth.

🚨 TREASURY SECRETARY BESSENT JUST NUKED ANTHROPIC & OPENAI’S “ROGUE AI” IMMUNITY SCAM ON LIVE TV "A sitting employee came out, said there's a 10% chance of an extinction level event. But then the labs also said, take the liability off of our hands. And we will NOT do that. The Hugging Face incident is the responsibility of OpenAI management, NOT a bunch of agents. It is humans who are responsible, not the AI. These labs need to take responsibility for themselves. They can slow down any time they want to." CHECKED.

Lots of calls for "slowing down"... why aren't the labs calling for a 10x or 100x increased effort in ALIGNMENT work? After all, that is the core issue. ASI that is fully aligned with humanity uplifts everyone.

Boom. SEC fans or non-SEC fans, read this.
The cornerstone of the state court lawsuits against the NCAA seeking another year of eligibility has been a breach of the implied covenant of good faith (evidence of arbitrary enforcement or bad faith is required to make that claim) in performing the contract between the NCAA and member institutions, of which college athletes are intended, third-party beneficiaries. That status is what allows them to sue for breach of contract. Countless courts have rightly issued injunctions on those grounds. The main reason, but not the only reason, I’m so confident the Conferences will prevail in litigation against college athletes is that, if you apply the law as it stands in every state, it is legally impossible for the players to prove a claim against the Conferences for breach of the implied covenant of good faith as third-party beneficiaries of a contract: 1) there is no factual or legal basis to argue that the Conferences’ Constitutions or Bylaws make the players third-party beneficiaries of the contractual relationship between the Conferences and their schools; and 2) neither the recent “NFL/NBA rule” nor the SEC intraconference transfer rule have been applied inconsistently, arbitrarily, or in bad faith. Contrast these Conference rules with the NCAA’s ridiculously inconsistent application of its own rules. The comparison is like apples to oranges. Whatever state trial judges may do, all of these cases will ultimately be decided by applying the law that exists in every state. There is no state - including Louisiana - where the law supports a valid legal claim for breach of contract against any Conference. As for the players’ lawyers’ assertion that a Conference can be enjoined as the alter ego of the NCAA or for acting in concert with the NCAA, that argument is likewise contrary to the established law in every state. As they say in Louisiana, that dog won’t hunt. Nor do I believe there is any basis for alleging that any Conference has violated the Sherman Act or its state law counterparts. No one seems to take that assertion seriously - not even the people making it. Like it or not, the evidence and applicable law is what determines final outcomes when cases are appealed - not what lawyers say in interviews or on social media. Similarly, where state law is involved in a federal court case invoking the U.S. Constitution (such as the Big 12’s lawsuit), federal district judges will carefully apply the law of the state where the controversy arose and are known for their unwillingness to heed to pressure from any Governor or fan base. That’s why I’d be telling any school that is considering putting a former NFL or NBA player on their roster they will likely regret making such a risky decision - one that will probably be career-ending for anyone who was willing to take that gamble. That’s my professional opinion after being in this business for forty years - not to suggest that should slow down the critics and self-taught X-Lawyers. 😬
