Chalking up the word Eternity on the streets of Sydney half a million times over several decades before being discovered, Arthur Stace was determined to point to realities beyond the daily grind. Following his example, Antony Pitts has written a six-minute choral piece setting simply the word "eternity", which receives its world premiere tomorrow (Friday night, 16 October, at 7pm) in St Andrew's Cathedral Sydney, as the opening of a Choral Celebration with St Andrew's Cathedral Choir Sydney and The Promise from Avondale University, along with @TONUSAUSTRALIS and RSCM NSW, all part of Excelsia University College's third and flourishing Excelsia International Christian Choral Celebration. Do come, if you're in Sydney – it's completely free (and there's an opportunity to donate to the Cathedral's Street T work). We're also singing a giant immersive version of @Gavin_Bryars's Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet, originally recorded and premiered by @TheSongCompany.

We can’t solve every aspect of widening access to the arts in our schools overnight. But it’s a step in the right direction

Fewer than 24 hours left to get your choir's videos entered into the 2026 Excelsia International Christian Choral Celebration: excelsia.wufoo.com/forms/202…
It's free, it's easy, there's a $5000AUD William Byrd Prize, and the optional theme this year is Light.
And we're into the final week for video submissions to the 2026 Excelsia International Christian Choral Celebration, open to any choir around the world. Last year we curated entries from five continents and the $5000 William Byrd Prize went to @capetownchoir (the 2024 winner was home-grown – the Choir of @community_pauls). Who will be this year's? Entry is completely free, and as simple as submitting two video links – URLs that can be already published on @YouTube or elsewhere, or on private cloud storage such as @Dropbox. The aim is to create, like last year, a giant playlist of uplifting sacred choral music from across the globe – this year our main theme is 'Light': excelsia.edu.au/internationa…

It's really about the power and beauty of the singing, not about the money (but there is a $5000 prize)... only a fortnight left for a choir you know – from anywhere around the globe – to enter the 2026 Excelsia International Christian Choral Celebration: excelsia.wufoo.com/forms/202… Submitting an entry is free and easy: just paste links to two videos of the Choir at its best! Last year we heard beautiful and powerful singing in entries from no fewer than five continents – this year our theme is Light as we look to encourage excellence in sacred choral music around the world:

Replying to @1equalmusic @BBCRadio3
Adrian was quite something. We are proud to have premièred one of his very few choral works, A Winter Warmer, later taken up by @TheSongCompany in Australia.
Adrian Jack, my first boss at @BBCRadio3 has died. He was a composer, a critic, and a scriptwriter for the Radio 3 announcers – in another era, and (for an early 20-something) a fearsome intellectual and personal presence, but utterly kind-hearted underneath. His eye for art and his ear for music were laser-focused, but also surprisingly wide and generous, as evidenced by the art on his walls at home and the music he helped commission or engender in whatever way – in concert series or on the radio. I was privileged not just to learn about the classics from his writing, but to work with him directly in the studio on two radiogenic #BetweentheEars features which he devised, Chromatic Fantasy and From the Diary of a Fly, where his ear and imagination for radio soundscapes excelled. Later in life, I interviewed him for A Strange Eventful History as the epitome of the sixth age of man, and he was disarmingly open about his ambitions, his sexuality, and his philosophy: "I think about how people will remember me on this earth...". His own music is practically sui generis, as you can hear on this Thorson & Thurber album, Black and Blue.
And yes, this portrait on his website has been rescued by AI from a very pixellated album booklet thumbnail.
