🚨Poundland is a scandal. Here’s why: People have attacked me for taking up this fight, saying ‘businesses go under all the time, that’s just the free market’. Sure, but this is *crony capitalism* and the 12,000 workers deserve better. This is what’s really happening: Poundland’s owners, an American outfit called Gordon Brothers are trying to put the business into administration. They bought it for £1 and have a £30m loan out to it, which they want back. It’s a tough sector, suffering from fierce competition, battered by Labour’s tax increases and customers feeling the pinch. However, the business is solvent, sales grew 6.7% in the last year and 8.4% in the first three weeks of October. It’s about to see the best trading weeks of the year approaching Christmas. This is not a business that has to shut its doors. What’s more, if Gordon Brothers want to walk away, there are others keen to take it on, as a going concern. I’ve spoken to two, highly credible parties today, who have attempted to buy the business. Both tell me they have the money. One, a hugely successful British retail entrepreneur, didn’t even get a response from Gordon Brothers. They would keep the stores intact and keep the positive momentum going. I’ve been inundated with messages from staff and suppliers, all saying how hard they’ve worked in the past year to turn the business around. Instead, Gordon Brothers are risking 12,000 jobs just before Christmas (and retail isn’t an easy industry to get another job in right now) and potentially another 10,000 amongst the suppliers. Poundland has a number of suppliers that only or largely supply them, and who will face an uncertain future without them. Then there’s the loss to the landlords, the rates owed to local councils, tax due to HMRC and the lost footfall on our high streets if 600 stores shut. The wage bill of Poundland is close to £500m, so you can imagine the cost to the taxpayer in benefits if 12,000 people lose their jobs. Could it be that Gordon Brothers, far from being a real ‘turnaround specialist’ is just trying to look after themselves and make a profit at the expense of literally everyone else? Might they be using the administration process to protect their loan? And the advisors who handle administration will also pockets millions in fees. Naturally. Could we see a decent business run down, shelves slowly emptied and then folded, with everyone losing out bar them? Thats what happened with another, similar business, Poundworld. It’s not for nothing that loyal staff emailing me are calling them ‘Greedy Brothers’. Should politicians be interested in this scandal? Too right they should. Frankly I’m shocked more aren’t. It shows how little Westminster cares about working people. You can be pro business, but anti crony capitalism. Reform UK is. The Business Secretary needs to ask searching questions of Gordon Brothers and this administration process, before a 35 year old mainstay of our high streets and 12,000 jobs are destroyed by them.

Translated: “we have realised that you are all so poor that your kids have to sell their old clothes to generate some pocket money. The admin involved at HMRC is too huge and too costly at £1000- So, we have adjusted the threshold to make it cheaper for us to catch people.”

If the world is getting a little too much may I recommend the inexplicably obsolete word ‘latibulating’, from the 17th century? To latibulate is to find a cosy corner somewhere and hide in it.

No spoilers but WOW! #TheDiplomat on @netflix season 4 has been so fantastic! Best one yet. Just watched the final episode and it’s a complete jaw dropper! Absolutely amazing season. Can’t wait for season 5. I can’t get over what I just watched.

Aww I love this 🥹
We mourn the passing of Patrick Stewart, who inspired countless individuals at NASA (and beyond) to boldly go where no one has gone before.

When I think of Patrick Stewart, it's not Captain Picard or Professor X that springs to mind. It's this quote. May he rest in peace.

Where is the outrage from the media and the City? Why is Burnham not being hounded out of office with ‘lettuce’ comparisons?

For the Westminster bubble, Campbell getting challenged on BBC Question Time is treated like political pantomime and studio theatre. For those who lived through the consequences of the 2003 invasion, there is nothing entertaining about it. One hundred and seventy-nine British service personnel came home from Iraq in flag-draped coffins. Thousands more returned with shattered limbs, catastrophic brain injuries, and minds destroyed by blast trauma. While New Labour spin doctors were massaged in Downing Street corridors and redrafted intelligence dossiers to manufacture a pretext for war, young British soldiers were sent into meat grinders like the siege of CIMIC House in Al-Amarah and the streets of Basra—patrolling in lightly armoured "Snatch" Land Rovers that ministers knew were death traps against shaped IEDs. From the desert wastes of Iraq to the legendary brotherhood of the SAS—where British and Commonwealth operators like New Zealanders in 22 SAS fought and bled shoulder to shoulder, from the harrowing evasion of Bravo Two Zero to black-ops counter-terror raids in Baghdad—our soldiers fulfilled their oath with unmatched courage. They fought for the man on their left and the man on their right. They did not die for corporate reconstruction contracts, Downing Street vanity, or Blairite messianism. For over twenty years, Alastair Campbell has enjoyed lucrative book deals, fawning media platforms, and podcast respectability lecturing the country on "integrity in public life". Calling him to account on live television isn’t a political stunt. It is the absolute bare minimum owed to 179 dead British troops, their grieving families, and the generational destruction unleashed in our name. @ZiaYusufUK said to his face what millions of veterans and citizens have wanted said for two decades. #bbcqt

Just want to tell you about an amazing colleague I met last week. Victoria joined us 3 years ago when she was still in prison, via our Max Spielmann training academy inside HMP Downview. She started to go out on day release, and has now worked her way up to shop manager, and now has become a member of the area team!

Well said, Ross Kemp 🌺👏👏👏 On the Thames today for the Poppy Appeal launch, he said: "The hardest thing is coming home and looking into the eyes of the mothers who lost their sons. So it's poignant we think about families when buying a Poppy." That's why we wear one. Not politics. Not war. The mums, the wives, the kids left behind. Buy a poppy. Look the seller in the eye. It's the least we can do.

The current chancellor has NEVER had a job outside of a union or the Labour party. Let that sink in for a minute.... He is 66 and has never had a proper job! Anyone surprised that his budget was useless?
