Johann Sebastian Bach’s Cantata Die Himmel erzählen die Ehre Gottes, BWV 76 (1723): composed for the Second Sunday after Trinity, this cantata was first performed in Leipzig on 6 June 1723, just one week after Bach began his tenure as Thomaskantor. Opening with a magnificent chorus based on Psalm 19, “The heavens declare the glory of God,” the work unfolds in two parts, performed before and after the sermon. The trumpet proclaims divine glory in the opening chorus, while the second part turns to intimate chamber music, featuring the oboe d’amore and viola da gamba to evoke Christian brotherly love. Both parts conclude with chorales based on Martin Luther’s hymn Es woll uns Gott genädig sein. Together with BWV 75, performed the previous Sunday, this ambitious cantata marks the beginning of Bach’s first Leipzig annual cycle, an extraordinary undertaking that would shape his legacy.

Today, the calendar makes a right triangle, for the last time this century.
This Saturday is October 24, 2026.
Write it as 10/24/26 or 24/10/26, and the same beautiful relationship appears:
10² + 24² = 26²
100 + 576 = 676
But here’s what makes today special.
There are infinitely many Pythagorean triples. Only a handful fit our calendar.
Using the rule
month² + day² = (last two digits of the year)²,
the month cannot exceed 12, and the day cannot exceed 31. Those small limits leave exactly 12 qualifying dates in this century.
Today is the last.
The next will be March 4, 2105:
3² + 4² = 5²
That is a wait of more than 78 years.
An infinite family of triangles. Just twelve appearances on a century’s calendar.
Happy Pythagorean Triple Day.

Just sublime, as fulfilling to sing as it is hear.
Johann Sebastian Bach’s Ich will hier bei dir stehen from the Matthäus-Passion, BWV 244 (1736-46): a chorale in E-flat major, using the Passion chorale melody by Hans Leo Hassler, Herzlich tut mich verlangen, with words by Paul Gerhardt from his hymn O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden (1656). Placed after Peter’s confident declaration that he will never abandon Jesus, the chorale expresses the believer’s desire to remain beside Christ even in death. Yet the audience knows that Peter will soon deny him, lending the words a poignant irony. Bach reinforces this tension by reusing the harmonization of the preceding chorale, Erkenne mich, mein Hüter, transposed down a semitone from E major to E-flat major. The darker sonority, together with the absence of the flutes heard in the earlier setting, suggests human frailty beneath the promise of unwavering fidelity. The text declares, “I will stand here beside you,” but the drama reveals how fragile human resolve can be.
