NEW: Russian forces claim to have evacuated over 4,000 Ukrainian civilians from frontline settlements in Donetsk Oblast, highlighting how wartime population displacement may facilitate Russia’s administrative and political integration of occupied populations in ways that raise concerns under international law. Other Key Takeaways: The Russian Ministry of Education announced its intent to launch a state-controlled television service in schools in occupied Ukraine in 2027. The Russian occupation leadership of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) is conducting outreach with children as young as kindergarten-aged in order to promote service in the Russian nuclear industry. The Mariupol occupation administration’s housing seizure and redistribution policy continues to disenfranchise Ukrainian residents. The Russian information space appears to have coalesced around a single narrative line intended to deflect from Russia’s responsibility for the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the occupied Oleshky area. Russia’s new three-year federal budget contains continued funding provisions for the occupation of Ukraine, signaling an overall shift in focus towards long-term occupation and integration projects.

The Geneva Conventions, adopted 77 years ago today and ratified worldwide, are the backbone of international humanitarian law. They: 🔹 Protect those who are not or no longer fighting. 🔹 Save lives and reduce suffering. Even in armed conflicts, humanity must prevail.

So often our posts cover the devastating impact of Russia’s invasion on #Ukraine’s children. Today, a heartwarming story: 4 🇺🇦 kids have returned home from Russian-occupied territory. Gratitude to all who worked behind the scenes to make this possible. 🙏
🇺🇦Four more Ukrainian children have returned home from the temporarily occupied territories. Thanks to the efforts of the Office of the Ombudsman of Ukraine, within the framework of the President of Ukraine’s @BringKidsBackUA initiative and with the support of the @FLOTUS Melania Trump, children aged 6 to 15 have safely returned to Government-controlled territory. I sincerely thank First Lady Melania Trump for supporting Ukraine’s humanitarian efforts to bring our children home. Special thanks also to MHP, an international company with a Ukrainian spirit, and its Founder and CEO, Yuriy Kosiuk, for supporting this return. I sincerely congratulate the children on being reunited with their loved ones. We will continue working until every Ukrainian child returns home.

2/3 Throughout the article, the authors show that modern sieges follow a pattern: cities are encircled, humanitarian access is obstructed, critical civilian infrastructure is systematically destroyed and dismantled, and starvation is used as a weapon against civilians.

POW status guarantees protection under #IHL; summary execution is strictly prohibited & is a #warcrime. With reports of Ukrainian #POWs executed, tortured, denied medical treatment & subject to sexual violence, explore the rules of detention on our blog: law.georgetown.edu/icji/blog…
‼️Russia has once again executed a Ukrainian prisoner of war. Even in captivity, where international law guarantees protection, our defenders continue to be killed. On July 13, near the village of Yalta in the Donetsk region, Russian forces captured a Ukrainian servicemember. After interrogation, one occupier ordered his execution, and another carried it out. This is yet another war crime and further proof of Russia’s disregard for international humanitarian law. I have sent official letters to the United Nations and the ICRC and expect a proper international response. Those responsible for this war crime must be brought to justice.
