The United Nations was established after World War II with a clear mandate: resolve international conflicts and prevent wars. Yet when major geopolitical flashpoints ignite, the UN is usually absent. This is not an operational oversight; it is a structural defect built directly into the Security Council veto. Because any permanent member or key ally can block resolutions, the UN’s core peacekeeping mandate remains eternally gridlocked when and where it matters most. Unable to fulfill its primary objective, the UN has turned inward to survive - a classic case of institutional mission creep. Today, it has morphed into one of the largest bureaucratic apparatuses in world history, absorbing $68 to $74 billion annually. This includes $5.1 to $5.4 billion for peacekeeping operations and $3.5 to $3.7 billion to maintain a workforce of up to 190,000 personnel. The UN also operates in isolation from ordinary economic reality. Under the 1946 Convention on the Privileges and Immunities of the United Nations, its staff enjoy lifelong exemptions from national income taxes on their salaries. Meanwhile, the taxpayers funding this system face escalating tax burdens driven by UN-backed climate and economic policies. By transferring its focus away from war prevention, the UN has redirected its authority toward climate regulation and managing migration flows. Treaties like the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change operate unhindered by Security Council vetoes. This allows unelected officials to manage vast financial mechanisms - including carbon credit registries and the Green Climate Fund - with minimal accountability. In practice, these strict carbon emissions targets penalise Western industry while competitors like China and India expand heavy production under developing-nation exemptions. This is global wealth redistribution under the banner of environmental stewardship. A similar pattern governs the UN’s humanitarian aid for mainly illegal migrants. Initiatives like the Global Compact for Migration institutionalise and facilitate mass population flows, which erode national sovereignty. Unable to stop war, the UN’s survival now depends on fabricating fresh mandates. It has traded its original peacekeepers purpose for climate control and migration management. What's next?
