AI has arrived. But has it truly diffused across enterprise, government and to the society at large? Do organisations fully understand implications of AI deployment across the 10 layer stack? How do we achieve sovereignty in AI? Today, at the AI for India Summit 2026 – AI Diffusion at Work, we are releasing the AI Diffusion Matrix Report and the AI Diffusion Assessment Tool. Developed by @AI4IndiaOrg in consultation with NITI Aayog , 'AI Diffusion Matrix' looks beyond pilots and isolated use cases. It helps organisations understand how effectively AI is spreading across strategy, people, processes, data, technology and governance—and where progress is getting blocked. The free AI Diffusion Assessment Tool converts this framework into action. In a few minutes, organisations can assess their current position, identify gaps and find clear priorities to move forward. We hope these resources will help organisations, government departments, industries, states and countries move from AI experimentation to meaningful, measurable outcomes. Collaborate with us to further refine and develop this framework and evolve threads in specialised areas. Read the report: lnkd.in/gMrHbhvm Take an assessment: aidm.ai4india.org AI adoption is activity. AI diffusion is progress. #AIDiffusionMatrix #AI4India #ArtificialIntelligence @karandi65 @shashidigital @anewalok @NITIAayog @ravi_iitm @Krishnan8gk @JaiAsundi @gops85 @141r18 @RajeshShenoy21

India’s AI advantage may lie in the public infrastructure it has already built. Aadhaar made identity verification easier. UPI transformed digital payments. The Account Aggregator framework is making financial data more accessible with individual consent, while BHASHINI is expanding access across Indian languages. What happens when these systems meet AI? At SamvAAd 2026, Sahamati’s annual meeting on open finance, discussions highlighted an important opportunity: combining trusted digital public infrastructure with AI to make financial services more accessible, improve credit assessments and detect fraud. The principle is straightforward. AI needs reliable data to make better decisions, and that data must be shared with consent and protected by design. India’s approach offers a useful lesson: build trusted public foundations first, then build intelligence on top of them. #WATCH | Mumbai: Infosys Co-founder Nandan Nilekani says, "One way to assess the performance of the Account Aggregator (AA) ecosystem is to compare it with two other major digital platforms: Aadhaar and UPI. Aadhaar records nine crore authentications per day, or 90 million authentications, along with 1.5 crore e-KYC transactions daily for purposes such as opening bank accounts, obtaining mobile connections, and investing in mutual funds. India has a population of 1.38 billion, and 95% of adults are now enrolled in Aadhaar. UPI is approaching one billion transactions per day, with around 775 crore transactions and four million recurring UPI mandates daily. This level of activity was almost non-existent two years ago. Today, approximately 45–50% of adults use UPI, with around 550 million monthly active users. The Account Aggregator ecosystem is processing 10 lakh consents per day and 1.2 crore data pulls, making it a significant platform. However, only around 20% of adults currently use it. There is enormous potential for the Account Aggregator ecosystem to grow, as there is no reason why half a billion people should not be using it. The necessary infrastructure is already in place. The next step is to deepen and broaden its use, with the goal of reaching more than 50% of adults. This could be a major development over the next two to three years..."

Wrong lessons to draw. It is not about general demand for AI. It ought to be about the kind of AI that Indian Enterprises or Public Bodies really need. Purpose-built domain specific models that can demonstrate tangible value are what will drive Enterprise demand and deeper adoption across industry verticals. Some of those use cases may not even need large farms of expensive GPUs. We need to measure AI Diffusion across layers rather than fixate on one layer.
We reported on an important story around AI and compute demand in India earlier this week. Question to academics, founders and VCs- why is there no demand for compute in the domestic market? So much so that govt is now allwping those empanelled with IndiaAI to sell it overseas. Is it a question of red tape (access), paucity of capital or lack of training/consumer AI startups that need compute

India’s AI opportunity will depend on more than computing power and new models. It will also depend on whether small businesses can use AI to solve everyday problems, improve productivity and build products of their own. With MSMEs contributing around 31% of India’s GDP, helping them adopt AI is an important part of making its economic benefits more widely accessible. In our latest article, we look at what practical AI adoption could look like for MSMEs, from trusted guidance and hands-on training to affordable tools and industry-specific solutions. We also explore VAIPER at IIT Madras, a centre of excellence working to help MSMEs apply AI to product design and manufacturing, alongside other initiatives supporting AI adoption among small businesses. The next phase of India’s AI journey will depend on how effectively these technologies reach businesses beyond the technology sector. While Elon Musk is desperate about satellite based Direct to Device connectivity in India, it is good to see the natively developed terrestrial based Direct to Mobile innovation - D2M all ready to take off
Feature phone with free D2M TV channels at IMC 2026 Streaming live video without an active internet connection, Wi-Fi, or even a SIM card? That's no longer a concept. It's running live on hardware at India Mobile Congress 2026. We got our hands on the FreeStream D2M (Direct-to-Mobile) feature phone, and it might just be one of the most disruptive pieces of tech showcased this year. Instead of relying on mobile cellular data packs, D2M works like terrestrial broadcast beaming live multimedia, news, sports, and educational content straight to the device over dedicated broadcast waves. Built specifically to crack the digital divide across India, this pocket-friendly feature phone lets users watch live video at zero data cost and with virtually zero buffering. The device is said to retail around ₹1,000 and will be launching soon. The company also plans on bringing this technology to smartphones, laptops, tablets and even car infotainment systems! Could broadcast convergence reshape how India consumes mobile video, especially in Tier 2, Tier 3, and rural markets? Tell us your thoughts below and follow Business Today TV for more! #D2M #FreeStream #IndiaMobileCongress #TechNews #FeaturePhone #IMC2026

Thank you Prof @karandi65 for an amazing session. I thought the audience would be exhausted after a long day at the India Mobile Congress yesterday but they were riveted and we kept getting question after question after we opened the floor. Prof Karandikar, previously a professor at IIT Bombay and director at IIT Kanpur played a crucial role in seeing the 1 lakh crore RDI fund through when he was DST Secretary. He is currently a full time member of @NITIAayog and looks at science and technology. Few insights that stayed with me during the session When I asked him about why we aren't able to turn institutional research/college lab projects into viable products, he cited the lack of "translational research" at top institutes due to weak academia-industry linkages. On Deeptech, while an RDI fund is a boost, what will be crucial is landing the first big customer and more patient capital at the growth stage. He said the government is working towards setting up prototyping, fabrication facilities across the country to help startups. One of his mandates at Niti Aayog is to actively identify a list of areas where India has several technology and research gaps, something they will release soon.
It was a pleasure to join Ms. @chandrarsrikant of @moneycontrolcom for a fireside chat on “Scale Beyond Boundaries: Tech Enabling Viksit Bharat 2047” at the International Bharat6G Symposium 2026, held alongside the India Mobile Congress at Yashobhoomi, New Delhi.

At the recent #CRFSpecialTalk, Mr @anewalok, Co-founder of @AI4IndiaOrg, shared perspectives on India’s AI ecosystem, from semiconductors and #DataCentres to models, data and enterprise adoption. The conversation focused on: 1) AI sovereignty: Building visibility and control across the AI stack, rather than limiting India’s role to applications. 2) Data Daan: Enabling a free and fair exchange of data, where people can share their data with greater consent and ownership. 3) AI Diffusion Matrix: Assessing not just whether organisations use AI, but their readiness, culture, control and the value AI creates. 4) Future of work: Jobs are likely to change rather than simply disappear, with new roles and skills emerging. 5) Education: Moving beyond memorisation towards creativity, problem-solving and learning with AI, while preparing teachers for this transition. 6) Trust and accountability: Ensuring accuracy, clear responsibility, human sign-off and meaningful routes for redress. The discussion also highlighted the need for India to build #Semiconductor capabilities, reduce the stigma around skilled #Trades and focus on manufacturing-led opportunities. The larger takeaway is that AI’s impact should not be measured only by productivity or #GDP, but also by access, abundance, and equity. As India shapes its #AI future, the question is not only how widely AI is adopted, but who owns it, who benefits from it and who remains accountable. #ArtificialIntelligence #AISovereignty #ChintanResearchFoundation

AI is not always about generating text, images or code. Sometimes, the most useful thing an AI system can do is make a small decision. A new category of System One decision models is emerging around this idea. These models choose between defined options, whether routing a request, selecting a tool, assessing an alert or deciding when human intervention is needed. The latest entrant, AT0M by Pienomial, takes this further by putting ownership and deployment control at the centre. The 60 million parameter model can run within an organisation’s own infrastructure, without network dependencies or per-token costs, making it relevant where data control and predictable performance matter. With reported decision accuracy of 78.9% on a public benchmark and response times under 16 milliseconds in a hosted NVIDIA T4 test, AT0M points to a broader shift: not every AI problem needs a large language model. Sometimes, a smaller, specialised model that makes one decision well can be the more practical choice. Read the full editorial here: ai4indiaweekly.substack.com/… @shashidigital @anewalok
