Here's the basic shift we need to make in the simplest way I can say it. Instead of asking: "What am I going to teach today?" Ask this. "How will I design class to produce evidence of learning?" That's how we start to change Tier 1 instruction. Learning is the job.

When teachers have no choice in the PD they attend, then the "professional" part of the PD is missing. So, dear principals, superintendents, and supervisors, give teachers some choice. Develop academic trust. Teachers know what they want to/need to learn more about.

Asking Ss what they want feedback on was a game changer in my assessment journey. I ask them to reflect in writing on: 1. What they are proud of & why, 2. What they find challenging & why, 3. What they might need retaught, & 4. What specifically they want feedback on.
If possible, ask kids what they want feedback on before providing any. It's honestly a game-changer for the feedback. Make it simple. My students often just leave a comment on their work with one thing to celebrate and one question for me. It changes the dynamic completely.

Thank you @pennykittle & @KellyGToGo for the 2pg spread! The spark of inquiry and creativity that this ignited in my students and myself (yes, I did one too!) is what every teacher wants and should experience ❤! #KnowBetterDoBetter #4EssentialStudies #TeachingIsLife

Some millennial tweeted that Gen X had no “pivotal moment”. Kids, we were all brought into cafeteria and auditoriums in school, told we were about to witness history, then watched the spaceship Challenger explode before our eyes.

So, crazy story. I went to the library today and I found this book that I didn't want to check out for my kids. So, I just didn't check it out.

My teachers wanted a clear picture of Tier 1 learning. This was the result. Something that allowed for a teacher autonomy & creativity, also providing years worth of growth impact built into the design to make learning happen & gaps close. Included in my book.
