#AgricultureInsuranceWorks Today, we conclude our #ClaimsInAction series with a spotlight on the Karamoja sub-region. Together with our partners, we supported the rollout of agriculture insurance across Karamoja to strengthen farmer resilience and improve risk management within farming systems. 📍 Working across both Northern and Southern Karamoja: ✅ Farmer groups were enrolled into insurance ✅ Farmers were trained on how the cover works ✅ Continuous support and sensitization were provided throughout the season When adverse weather shocks occurred, insured farmers received claim payouts, providing timely financial relief that helped them recover and continue production. Beyond payouts, regular refresher trainings and sensitization sessions helped farmers better understand: 🔹 How insurance works 🔹 Their role in the process 🔹 How the overall system is structured This continuous engagement has played an important role in strengthening trust, transparency, and participation. One of the clearest indicators of impact has been the strong rate of policy renewals across the sub-region ,a growing sign of confidence in agriculture insurance as a practical risk management tool. 📊 With over 1,000 farmers insured across the Karamoja rollout, we are witnessing a clear shift, From vulnerability to preparedness. From uncertainty to structured resilience through insurance 🫱🏿‍🫲🏾 This is exactly why we exist ,to build resilience for farmers across Uganda. #ClaimsInAction #AgricultureInsurance #Karamoja #FarmerResilience #ClimateRisk #UAIS #InclusiveInsurance #Agriculture #Uganda

On 12–13 October, together with @UNDP_SDGFinance and @BiovIntCIAT_eng, we convened institutional leaders and coffee value chain actors under the Uganda Coffee Platform (UCP), through @CafeAfrica , for a technical workshop on de-risking Uganda’s coffee value chain. Discussions explored how climate risks affect coffee production, financing and business operations, and how climate risk intelligence, agriculture insurance and targeted investments can strengthen resilience across the sector. Key priorities included integrating forward-looking climate data into lending and investment decisions, financing adaptation practices, strengthening collaboration among insurers, financial institutions and regulators, and developing practical roadmaps to manage climate risks across the value chain.

As Uganda targets 20 million bags of coffee annually by 2030, increasing production must go hand in hand with protecting farmers, businesses and investments from climate-related risks. Through the #UAIS, we recognise #AgricultureInsurance as an important tool for managing these risks. Working with partners across the coffee value chain, we remain committed to advancing solutions that connect climate risk intelligence, investment and insurance to build a more resilient and sustainable coffee sector. #ClimateResilience #AgriculturalInsurance #AgricultureFinance #Sustainability

For farmers, lenders, and agribusinesses, understanding the basis of cover is an important step toward managing agriculture risk. Under the Uganda Agriculture Insurance Scheme (UAIS) crop insurance can be structured around the financial exposure that matters most: 100% of the Loan Facility – protecting agricultural credit used for crop production against covered losses. Input Costs – covering eligible investments such as seed, fertilizer, and other production inputs. Expected Yield – protecting the anticipated value of the harvest against shortfalls resulting from covered perils. Whether you are financing a smallholder farmer or managing a larger agricultural investment, choosing the right basis of cover can help strengthen financial resilience when unexpected events affect production. How is your organization managing agricultural risk this season? #CropInsurance #ClimateResilience #RiskManagement

"Other farmer groups asked us about the insurance program after hearing about the improvements in our productivity. My advice to them is to explore joining, so that we can all grow and develop together as farmers." Today Nabulime Aisha from Bugoma Farmers Group, Kayunga District farms differently. With crop insurance, a bad season no longer means losing everything it means recovery, stability, and steady growth in her farm produce. She's now one of the farmers encouraging others in her community to take the same step, because protecting your farm shouldn't be an afterthought. "What does agriculture insurance mean to the farmers it protects?  Over the past 10 years, the true measure of our impact has been the lives behind every policy. Meet Simon from Acau Karlo Farmer Group in Kotido District . After insuring his farm through the Uganda Agriculture Insurance Scheme, Simon received an insurance payout following a drought helping him recover and continue farming when it mattered most. His story is one of many that demonstrate how agriculture insurance can strengthen resilience, protect livelihoods, and give farmers greater confidence to invest in agriculture. #10YearsOfImpact #UAISFarmerStories

Uganda's agriculture insurance journey featured in this new case study by @UNDP and @UNDP_SDGFinance , a timely reflection on how far the sector has come and what is possible through sustained collaboration. Over the years, we have seen firsthand that building a resilient agriculture insurance market requires more than insurance products alone. It takes well-targeted premium subsidies that respond to different farmer needs, a strong consortium of insurers that can responsibly pool risk, an enabling regulatory environment, and committed development partners willing to invest in long-term systems change. The Uganda Agriculture Insurance Scheme has demonstrated that, with the right partnerships and institutional framework, agriculture insurance can evolve from isolated pilot projects into a national mechanism that strengthens resilience for farmers across the country. We are encouraged to see this journey, the lessons and opportunities documented by UNDP. Read full case study here: irff.undp.org/blog/pilots-fa…
Uganda's experience shows how agricultural insurance can evolve from fragmented pilots into a structured national scheme. Through the Uganda Agriculture Insurance Scheme, the country has combined differentiated premium subsidies, a consortium of insurers, regulatory innovation and development partnerships to expand protection for farmers facing climate and production risks. Agriculture contributes nearly a quarter of Uganda's GDP and provides employment for more than 70 per cent of the labour force, making effective agricultural risk management critical to livelihoods and food security. This case study from UNDP explores how Uganda has moved from pilot initiatives to a public-private agricultural insurance system that supports resilience and adaptation in one of the world's most climate-vulnerable countries. We are proud to see our partnership with @Emata_UG featured in @Forbes_Afrique and  the impact this collaboration continues to deliver for smallholder farmers in Uganda.👏🏾 Through our partnership with Emata we have worked to address each of these barriers directly: ✔️By facilitating farmer access to government-subsidised insurance, we have made meaningful cover attainable for smallholders for whom it was previously out of reach. ✔️By integrating insurance into the Emata loan process, we eliminated additional paperwork and removed the burden of upfront payment at the point in the season when farmers can least afford it. ✔️Mostly significantly, structured payout events have allowed farmers to witness claims being honoured firsthand. Following the most recent payout cycle for Agri Evolve coffee farmers in  Rwenzori, confidence in insurance visibly grew across this farming community. This partnership reflects what is possible when institutions align around a shared purpose: expanding financial resilience for Africa's farmers through practical, farmer-centred solutions.💪🏿 The full feature can be read via Forbes Afrique below. forbesafrique.com/lassurtech…

🌱 This is what resilience looks like. The difference between surviving a climate shock and recovering from one can change everything. From struggling through the aftermath of drought to rebuilding livelihoods, restoring productivity, and creating hope for the next generation, resilience is about giving farmers the ability to recover stronger. For the past 10 years, this has been the purpose of the Uganda Agriculture Insurance Scheme (UAIS). ✔️Protecting farmers from production risks. ✔️Helping households recover after droughts, floods, and other shocks. ✔️Safeguarding investments and livelihoods. ✔️Giving farmers the confidence to plant and invest again. This isn't just one farmer's story. Hundreds of thousands of farmers across Uganda have experienced this journey, building resilience through agriculture insurance and proving that a single shock doesn't have to define a family's future. Over the last decade, together with our partners and stakeholders , we've shown that resilience is not simply surviving adversity, it's recovering stronger. Ten years on, our mission remains the same;- building resilient farming communities, one farmer at a time. #UAISat10 #10YearsOfImpact #AgricultureInsurance #ClimateResilience #InnovatingForInclusionAndImpact #ProtectingFarmers #GrowingTogether

🌱 Ten years ago, we started with a simple question; How can Uganda protect smallholder farmers from climate and production risks in a way that makes agriculture more bankable, resilient, and attractive to both farmers and financial institutions? That question sparked a decade-long journey to strengthen resilience in Uganda's agricultural sector and expand access to agriculture insurance for smallholder farmers. In FY2016/17, the Government of Uganda launched the Uganda Agriculture Insurance Scheme (UAIS), a Public-Private Partnership as a pilot initiative to provide a safety net for farmers, protecting them against production risks while making agriculture a more secure and attractive investment. Over the past decade, we have worked to design and scale insurance solutions that help farmers better manage climate and production risks Together, we have achieved: ✔️1 million+ farmers reached with agriculture insurance products and services. ✔️UGX 53.8+ billion paid in claims, helping farmers recover from shocks. ✔️Coverage expanded to all districts/regions across Uganda. ✔️Strengthened data-driven climate risk solutions to improve product design, pricing, and targeting. ✔️Promoted inclusive financial protection for women, youth, and smallholder farmers. ✔️Advanced innovation in climate and agriculture insurance systems to build a more resilient future. None of this would have been possible without the unwavering support of our member insurers, the Government of Uganda, partner institutions and, most importantly, the farmers and communities who continue to inspire our work every day. As we celebrate 10 years of the Uganda Agriculture Insurance Scheme, we reflect with gratitude on how far we've come and look ahead with renewed commitment to building even stronger, more inclusive, and more resilient agricultural systems for Uganda. Here's to the next decade of protecting livelihoods, strengthening resilience, and growing together. #UAISat10 #10YearsOfImpact #AgricultureInsurance #ClimateResilience #ProtectingFarmers #FinancialInclusion #Agriculture #Uganda

#HappeningNow at the #32NationalAgricultureShow in Jinja 📍 Exploring Key Conversations around Climate Resilience and Financial Inclusion in the agriculture sector at the Symposium on Digital Market and Financial Spaces, convened by @WorldVisionUg We had the opportunity to share with farmers on why Agriculture Insurance is becoming increasingly important. #AgricultureInsurance is more than a financial product it is a resilience tool. It helps farmers recover from unexpected losses, protects investments made throughout the season, improves access to finance, and gives producers the confidence to continue investing in agriculture despite growing climate risks. As digital solutions continue to reshape agriculture, they also present an opportunity to make insurance more accessible, more efficient, and more inclusive for farmers across the country. We appreciate @WorldVisionUg for creating this platform for meaningful dialogue on building a more inclusive and resilient agricultural sector through innovation, partnerships, and risk management. #ClimateResilience #DigitalAgriculture #FinancialInclusion #NationalAgriculturalShow2026 #JinjaShow2026 #TheAgroConsortium – at Jinja, Uganda

Looking back at the 2026 @AIOSocialMedia Confrence in Cairo 🌍 Agriculture insurance took centre stage at #AIO2026, as leaders from across Africa gathered under the theme "Insurance as an Enabler of Economic Growth for All." The discussions reinforced a shared reality;-while agriculture remains the backbone of African economies, climate risk and low insurance penetration continue to limit its full potential. We were proud that @AgroConsortium contributed to these powerful conversations. We joined a high-level panel on "Innovative Insurance Solutions for Agricultural Growth in Africa." sharing Uganda’s practical experience under the Uganda Agriculture Insurance Scheme (UAIS), focusing on what it takes to move from design to a functioning, scalable system that farmers trust and use. From Uganda’s implementation journey, three lessons stood out: 🌱 Trust is built at the point of delivery. Agriculture insurance only becomes meaningful when farmers consistently experience timely communication, transparent processes, and credible claims handling through a coordinated implementation structure. 🤝 Scale depends on embedding, not reinventing systems. In Uganda, the most effective distribution has come through integration with existing ecosystems banks, SACCOs, cooperatives, aggregators, and value chain actors already working with farmers. 📊 Systems matter as much as products. Moving toward national-scale agriculture insurance requires strong policy frameworks, reliable climate and agricultural data systems, coordinated public-private action, sustainable financing, and continuous institutional learning. What stood out most in Cairo was the convergence of thinking across countries;- agriculture insurance is no longer viewed in isolation, but as part of broader resilience and food security systems. As AIC, we remain committed to contributing Uganda’s implementation experience to these continental dialogues, while working closely with the Government of Uganda, insurers, development partners, and ecosystem partners to expand access to inclusive and scalable agriculture insurance solutions. We also acknowledge the collaboration with @UNDP_SDGFinance Insurance and Risk Finance Facility (IRFF), whose support continues to strengthen evidence, innovation, and learning within Uganda’s agriculture insurance ecosystem. 📸Swipe through for highlights from Cairo;- an inspiring week of dialogue, learning, and collaboration shaping the future of insurance in Africa.🌍 #AIO2026 #AgriculturalInsurance #ClimateResilience #Insurance #FinancialInclusion #PublicPrivatePartnerships #FoodSecurity #Innovation #Uganda #Africa
