I've had this since 06 January 2011. As I've grown older, it has made me think longer and has become more meaningful.
My recent learning of @GEEQL passing away springs to mind. (Thank you, @ATechieAttempts.)
The Second Tuesday of August indeed...

The farm attack that shocked South Africa: Farmer brutally tortured, his ears cut off, and then shot in the back
"The violent nature of the attacks, he said, shows that they cannot be dismissed as ordinary crimes in South Africa."

How is the internet less private than in 2006, when the whole family shared one computer?
Back then, the internet was weird, personal, and all of ours.
So, we got your favorite meme legends back together to say it louder: What happened to the internet? 1/3

A U.S. congressman wants to change how we legally “own” video games.
Rep. Ritchie Torres has announced plans to introduce the Power To The Players Act, a bill that would direct the FTC to create rules protecting consumers who buy video games.
The proposal would give players three basic rights:
>The right to own the games they purchase, rather than simply receiving a revocable license
>The right to keep playing games after online servers are shut down, through an offline mode
>The right to transfer or resell games they own
Torres argues that if a company can take a game away simply by shutting down its servers, then the consumer didn’t really buy the game in the first place.
Torres also hopes the legislation could eventually establish a precedent for ownership rights across other parts of the digital economy:
“If you pay for it, you own it.”

During development of Metroid Prime we actually had a PC version. It didn't render with any lighting (full bright) and was barely playable but the Visual Studio debugger was way better than the Power PC Metrowerks debugger. I debugged the majority of the gameplay code on PC since the crappy unlit graphics didn't matter when your debugging puzzles.
Kind of wacky to have a PC version again. I wonder if the port's renderer does the dynamic lighting and the TEV blend modes correctly.

open source cuda.
The end of software secrecy is almost upon us. The death of closed source, and the final triumph of open source.
I should have realized this a few months ago when I successfully decompiled the game of Firefighter from an ancient DOS shareware binary. My robot friend was able to tell it had been written in Borland Pascal from looking at the data layout; it gave me back very readable Pascal code with sensibly chosen function and variable names. I transpiled it to Rust and now ship it as part of my heritage games collection.
The thing is, I thought of this as a fun stunt but didn't have any confidence that the technique would scale up to large, real programs. I have since learned that people are now doing this sort of thing with entire AAA games, which are among the most complex software artifacts ever to be shipped as a binary. If they can be decompiled, anything can be.
This has implications. Massive implications. We need to think about what the world is like when, in general, there is no longer a secrecy moat around almost any software at all.

Fun part about building systems - you spend a very long time trying to have more than one idea. once that happens you spend the rest of your time trying to think about the tradeoffs and contradictions between the different ideas 😀😀

GOG Preservation Program now lets you download 3D scans and printable versions of the original big-box PC packaging for selected classic games.
The first games include Star Trek: 25th Anniversary, Armikrog, Descent, Hitman: Codename 47, and Myst.
So if you miss those huge ’90s PC boxes, you can literally print your own.
It’s not like owning an original physical but it’s a really nice option for collectors, especially since so many old PC boxes have disappeared over the years.

Independent bookstores in Europe are receiving unusual bulk orders, and some booksellers worry the books could be linked to AI companies.
One Irish bookstore reportedly received an order for around 5,000 books, many obscure titles not normally ordered in such quantities.
Other bookstores have received orders worth €10,000 to €50,000.
They are worried that the books could be bought, scanned, used as AI training data and then destroyed

This is because of a « bug » from Microsoft Defender in one update of Windows 11, who magically made VLC plugins cache quarantined by Windows.
Reinstalling VLC or regeneration of the plugin cache will fix this.
Calling open source software embarrassing when it is a Windows update that broke it is quite disrespectful.
Finally switched *away* from VLC *to* Microsoft Media Player, because VLC now takes 33 seconds to start playing an mp3 after clicking on it.
A large sector of open source software is in a truly embarrassing place now...

According to the developers of VLC, the "bug" comes from Microsoft Windows:

SAMSUNG'S OWN WARRANTY JUST BACKFIRED
Louis Rossmann's 4TB SSD died under warranty. Samsung offered a $330 refund and claimed they had no replacement stock.
The same drive is on Samsung's own Amazon store for $949 - and their own warranty says he's owed market value.
- He paid $330 for the 990 Pro under two years ago, today it costs nearly 3x that
- Samsung's warranty literally promises a refund of the "then current market value" if they can't replace it
- They claimed a memory shortage while selling the exact drive on Amazon by the dozen
- He's giving them 60 days before filing in Travis County small claims court
They wrote the clause. They just never thought prices would triple.
Louis Rossmann is planning to sue Samsung because of a warranty problem with a 4TB SSD drive that he bought from Best Buy for around 330 dollars about two years ago and that stopped working while still under warranty.
He sent Samsung proof of the failure and they asked for the drive to test it but after checking they returned it saying it was fine even though Rossmann tested it again and confirmed it was still broken.
Samsung then offered him only the original 330 dollar refund and said they had no stock for a replacement yet the exact same drive is currently selling on Amazon for about 949 dollars.
