I wrote the song “I Won’t Whisper About It” to acknowledge all mothers, like my own, who have lost a child to suicide. Today, October 1, is the 12th anniversary of my brother Scott's loss. The mothers (and fathers) who choose to become suicide prevention advocates in the wake of their devastating losses are truly heroines and heroes among us. This song honors them. It is my hope that an established female country artist will cut this song, which is currently unreleased with the exception of this video I made for it. If you are moved by the song, please consider retweeting it or tagging someone in a comment who you think might be able to share it with an established artist who would be a good fit to record this song. Thank you, friends. 🙏 #SuicidePrevention #SuicideAwareness

In October 2016, near the end of a Tonight Show taping, Jimmy Fallon pulled Olivia Newton-John into an unplanned duet of “You’re the One That I Want.” No rehearsal. No official choreography. Just two people singing into each other’s faces and moving across the studio floor. Jimmy remembered most of the words. The steps were approximate. Two years later Travolta would come on the same show and teach him the Four Corners move he had invented for the original Grease finale. In 2016 Jimmy was still guessing. What almost no one in that room knew was that Olivia had already been living with a private recurrence since 2013. A car accident, a hard seatbelt, a lump in the shoulder. She kept it quiet. “It’s my life,” she said later. By then she had already survived a 1992 diagnosis that arrived the same weekend her father died. Partial mastectomy, months of chemotherapy, reconstruction, then twenty quiet years. She called herself a thriver, not a survivor. A survivor clings to the boat. A thriver is already on land. Seven months after the Fallon performance she would cancel a tour for what she thought was sciatica. It was stage 4. The cancer had reached the sacrum. Bones broke. She learned to walk again. She used radiation and plant medicine her husband grew. She still smiled in public the way she smiled that night on Fallon’s stage. The clip that circulates now was posted as a tribute after she died in August 2022, thirty years after the first diagnosis. People watch her laugh, place a hand on Jimmy’s shoulder, and finish the song with that same bright voice. They call it optimism. It was also discipline. She had decided long before that illness would not be the loudest thing in the room. There is something almost unfair about how light the moment looks. Two people dancing badly and happily to a song written overnight in 1978 because a movie needed an ending. The woman in the frame had already buried a father and a sister to cancer and was carrying her own. She still showed up ready to play. That is the part that stays. Not the tragedy, which is obvious, but the choice to keep the music going anyway. She never asked the audience to notice the cost. She just sang the chorus like it still belonged to her. And for those two unscripted minutes, it did.
