Sinn Féin was originally outlawed by the government of Northern Ireland in 1956. Because its leadership was closely intertwined with the IRA, it remained an illegal, proscribed organisation in the UK for nearly two decades.
In May 1974, UK Secretary of State for Northern Ireland Merlyn Rees officially lifted the ban.
The British government did this in the hope of encouraging republican paramilitaries to abandon violence and move into democratic, mainstream political activity.
The Broadcasting Ban (1988–1994)
Though the Sinn Fein party remained legal after 1974, the UK government introduced the ‘Voice’ ban.
The restrictions were lifted 1994 after the IRA declared first major ceasefire.
Loyalist paramilitaries reciprocated with a ceasefire in October 1994. Although the IRA truce temporarily collapsed in February 1996 with the Canary Wharf bombing, a renewed ceasefire was established in July 1997.

In March 2027, Bro. Sam Innes will spend a night sleeping outdoors as part of The Great Tommy Sleep Out, raising money for Royal British Veterans Enterprise (RBVE) and the work they do for veterans who have found themselves without a home.@RBVECharity
It's a cause Sam knows well, having taken part last year, and he's signed up again for 2027 because the need hasn't gone away.
One in every 400 veterans in the UK is homeless, and for many of them the hardest battle comes after their service has ended.

This weekend saw the start of the SNP’s demise.
Not only have SNP became the ‘BIG BROTHER’ of Scotland by curtailing free speech on ‘X’ that no doubt will lead to public bodies being curtailed. They have now alienated their own members and our communities.
This kid- on ‘Communism’ will cost SNP votes and is the start of Scotland 🏴becoming a ‘Banana Republic’.
SNP also finally lost the plot by banning @spucprolife and offended many including our Catholic communities to the extent the honourable and kind man Bishop John Keenan took this deplorable SNP decision head on by making public comment to national press.
The SNP also gave a platform to the joint leader of the kid- on communist party ‘The Scottish Greens’ a party now funded in April 2026 by a £150K loan from ‘The Green Party’ in London led by the most dangerous man to free speech and national security @ZackPolanski .
This SNP platform enabled Scotland to finally hear the Greens racist communist position on Israel that leads to the hearts of our own cherished Jewish communities 🇮🇱
Swinney meanwhile has surrounded himself with yes men and women who are weak Ministers who do not have the knowledge or experience to save Scotland’s economy and protect our people from more social unrest and deprivation.
Next year is the Scottish council elections.
Swinney seems to forget the SNP was built by traditional activists, local men and women with core values that do not now align with his leadership.
These decent hard working people at the grass roots include councillors many of whom I know and respect.
They will not be happy with this weekends performances.
This is the start of a civil war within the SNP.

They are the most charitable and kind individual’s you will ever meet.

knit and donate thousands of baby hats and blankets for Scotlands Neonatal Hospital Units 🏴👶🍼
The GOLS women’s charitable foundations are built on the charity work by their women members who went before them.
Step forward the Ayrshire woman from Galston Maggie McIver (1880-1958) the founder of Glasgow Barras who was a sister of The Daughters of Dalmarnock LLOL 66.
The Barras ‘Queen’ charity work was unmeasurable for Glasgow’s poor and hungry.
It is really very simple for me these women and men voices deserve to be respected and heard by the @scotgov with regard to their great work.
It is time to understand and look behind the Sashes and Walks as to the social and economic contributions this community makes to Scotland 🏴.
I for one intend to support their @GrandMasterGOLS, executive team and their 30,000 members in raising their Christian voices loud and clear on the true facts of the GOLS and their modernisation program.
