There’s also a deeper irony in ppl treating health as a personal achievement: the conditions that make their good health possible are largely collective. Sanitation, disease prevention, workplace protections, etc. Yet the more they attribute their health to individual virtue, the less reason they see to sustain those conditions. This attitude is why public health was so easy to gut in the US.

20+ yrs ago, I got an abortion and they made me listen to the "heartbeat". I was 7 weeks along and unphased. I knew what I wanted to do.
It isn't even a real heartbeat. It's just feedback from the equipment trying to penetrate tissue. It would sound the same if it was a cyst

I think part of the problem is that even disability advocacy tends to be shaped by ppl who have enough capacity to participate in it.
