Reports that men don't read are based on Nielsen BookScan, which doesn't count indie. Yet indie is 87% of the book industry. Men didn't stop reading books, they stopped reading oldpub.
"Today, the Big Five publishers are staffed almost entirely by women. According to the most recent data, more than 70 percent of staffers are women. More than 70 percent of editors are women. Even 70 percent of all interns are women. At the executive level, more than 60 percent of leaders are women. In 2026, American publishing looks like lululemon."

Will you be self-publishing a book this year or in 2027? Just making author-ly conversation. Happy writing. :) :)

‘Best seller of the year for Sony’ and ‘didn’t sell enough to make a profit’ both being true is a *fantastic* place for Sony to be… Budget bloat on its own has the potential to gut the entire industry, and it is far from the only problem facing AAA dev companies.
Sucker Punch just laid off 26 people. The studio behind Ghost of Tsushima and Ghost of Yotei is cutting staff despite Yotei reportedly being Sony’s best-selling PS5 game of 2026 so far. In an email to staff, Sucker Punch said: “After carefully observing the challenges in the market” and reviewing its needs for the next project, it had decided to make “staffing reductions.”

When talking about series like Dungeon Crawler Carl, it had four years of an established fan base and massive success already. That's what publishing houses want from indies.

No one in the Big 5 is interested in indie literature save a few exceptions that blow into the stratosphere

I am honestly baffled at the people who would read what @DodgerWing or @HariSel57511397 write and say "nah. lets publish Mr. Beast and Minotaur Romantasy instead." These publishers deserve to go out of business.

YES. The Roger Moore Bonds are the best in the series.
The Radio Times praises the Roger Moore era and suggests that the next Bond could adopt his more lighthearted approach - what do you think? 📺 youtu.be/Fp8IROTxWQw?is=AH8p…

The industry was still talking about "getting more women into publishing" when it was already conspicuously majority-female, and female readers are very well catered for. So if trad pub thinks men don't read, any sane business would ask why, see a neglected, untapped market up for grabs, and go for it. I estimate at least 85% of my readers are male – men and boys will buy books even by female authors if you write what they want to read and address the issues that resonate with them. A feminised industry develops all the behaviours we see in feminised politics, and publishing is the perfect environment for things to become toxic because it's already a classic supplicant and gatekeeper system. But longhouse culture does female authors no favours either. If trad publishing survives in its current form, the return of men both as authors and publishing pros will be healthier for everyone. But I suspect many won't want to once they've gone indie and seen the up side.
The correct framing is that burgeoning male writers are not receiving investment - particularly in the literary genre. It is not suppression. It is neglect. Male writers just go Indy. The complaints that 'men don't read' by the Lithub Handwringers, should be understood to actually mean, 'men don't read contemporary authors we think they should read.' Solving the impasse without changing the investment structure would require a concerted effort of male writers to embrace the monoculture and become self-hating woke stenographers, or for men to stop rereading classics and put down the video games and read books that were not written for them, by them, or about them.

Support a great author and get some great books for a great price. DEW IT
To do some self shilling I want to announce that my original fantasy series, Hedge Knight, is on sale for $0.99 per ebook! That means you can get two books for $2! This is a week long sale, so get it while its hot! If you want action, adventure, likable and weighty characters, and just an a fun romp through two relatively self contained stories, look no further! Further details below: The Knight from Nothing (Book 1): Fortune favors the bold. For Helbram? He’ll have to make due with relentlessness instead. A lifetime of denial, combined with a condition that has left him without the spiritual powers of the Awoken or the magical might of Mages, has cracked and scuffed an unbreaking will that continues to march along a path that seems to deny him at every step. Ambition still burns within, but it’s been reduced to embers, fueling hands that still reach for goals that remain out of reach. Or so he thought. A mission to wipe out a band of bandits goes wrong and Helbram is forced into a fight for survival along with the stragglers of the failed expedition, trapped by technology from an age long past. Within the chaos of this conflict, the faded flames of dead dreams spark anew. And the first steps of a legend make themselves known. --- A Trial of Six Virtues (Book 2) Secrets lie beneath the Golden Peak. With the ruthless Band of Red ousted, the village of Goldshire recovers from their violent occupation. Helbram and his party aid in rebuilding, but restlessness persists among the people. An ancient door long sealed since time immemorial has been unearthed within the depths of the mountain: a door that, if mishandled, will obliterate the entire region and all who inhabit it. But hope yet remains in a chance encounter. Scholars from far and wide have come to investigate the mysterious Golden Peak and venture into its depths. However, their zealous inquiries couldn't prepare them for the dangers that await. And ancient trials long forgotten begin again. LINK TO SERIES DOWN IN REPLY
