@joelbrigham is back with another great episode on writing. This one focuses on query letters and first pages - - two very important items for writers seeking representation by a literary agent. More on Joel here: brighameditorial.com

Does the synopsis section of your query letter end with a rhetorical question? Get rid of it. The easiest way to do that is to replace that question with an "If...then..." statement. It'll nail down stakes and consequences so much better than a question mark!

I queried my first book in 2009. I sent over 150 queries and got nearly ALL form rejections. I didnโ€™t sign with my agent until 10 years and 7 (addtโ€™l) manuscripts later. Letโ€™s talk about whyโ€ฆ ๐Ÿงต

According to Facebook, 11 years ago today I sent out my very first query letter. Wild. I got a lot of rejections on my journey, but one yes changed everything. All this to say - it may take time to see your dreams happen, but you HAVE to take the first step.

I see query letters ask questions in two places: 1.) at the beginning of a query letter, and 2.) at the end of the story synopsis section. Please don't do either of those. Here's why: ๐Ÿงต 1/?

If your characters aren't wearing "funny hats," you're doing it wrong! At least according to Neil Gaiman, acclaimed author of American Gods, The Sandman, and Coraline. What does he mean by this, and how can you pop funny hats onto your characters? Let's examine, shall we? 1/?
