The Quad County Conference title race and WPIAL Class 6A playoff picture take center stage Thursday night as undefeated Central Catholic hosts a red-hot Hempfield team that has won five straight and clinched its first WPIAL playoff berth in 11 years.
The #1-ranked Class 6A team in Pennsylvania brings size, talent and experience. The Vikings’ offensive line averages approximately 6’5½”, 284 pounds, led by @Jimmy_Kalis , @NDFootball commit @JamesHalter15.
@OwenHerrick12 (@IlliniFootball commit) has thrown for 1,405 yards, 16 TDs and just 1 INT while completing 74.8% of his passes. He tossed 4 TDs in a 42-0 win over Canon-McMillan.
@connormelnik21 (Week 4 Big School POTW) averages 70.9 receiving yards per game, while @ZacharyGleason_ contributes on both sides of the ball. Roman Thompson leads the defense with 5.9 tackles per game and adds a physical presence at running back. @mannyregus7 averages 4.7 tackles per game.
Head coach Nick Keefer’s Spartans have completely turned things around, winning 5 straight: Canon-McMillan (38-34 OT), Seneca Valley (41-14), Norwin (29-6), Mount Lebanon (35-6) and Greater Latrobe (35-14).
Dual-threat QB @CardenLipp12 has thrown for over 806 yards and 7 TDs. Against Greater Latrobe, he accounted for 340 total yards and 3 TDs.
@AndrewBent7136 averages 58.8 receiving yards per game with 3 TDs, while Jake Kosinski will be key in the secondary against Central Catholic’s explosive passing attack.
Hempfield must pressure Herrick, play disciplined coverage, tackle well and limit explosive plays. Sustaining drives and keeping the Vikings’ offense off the field will be crucial.
Central Catholic’s size up front and Herrick’s remarkable efficiency give the Vikings a major advantage, but Hempfield’s five-game winning streak makes this a compelling regular-season finale.
Conference title implications. Playoff positioning. One major test for both teams. @TheWPIALEdition will be on hand with coverage!

Rest in peace, Coach Ed Dawson. 🙏
Cornell's head coach died after a medical emergency during Friday night's game at Rochester.
When Cornell brought football back in 2016, he started with a few dozen kids and lost the first 18 games. By 2019, the Raiders had their first section title in 36 years, the first WPIAL playoff win in school history and a trip to the semifinals.
"We love you, Coach Dawson." Cornell superintendent Aaron Thomas
Prayers to his family, his players and all of Coraopolis.
