Meet MAGAt and violent J6 insurrecionist Rodney Kenneth Milstreed. A hardline far-right extremist who pledged allegiance to the Proud Boys. Before his life fell apart, he worked as a traveling industrial machinist across oil and gas facilities. His run from reality ended in May 2022 when the FBI tracked him down and arrested him in Brighton, Colorado. On January 6, 2021, Milstreed took his political obsession to a violent extreme. Weeks prior, he actively injected steroids to get "jacked" for what he posted would be a bloody battle where people needed to "hang for treason" and that the situation would likely come down to "hand-to-hand combat." He explicitly messaged others detailing his plan for the rally, stating, "I went witha [sic] 4 ft club and intended to crack some heads." Armed with that four-foot wooden club masked as a flagpole, he threw it like a javelin at a line of officers, giving Capitol Police Officer Devan Gowdy a severe concussion. He then launched a smoke grenade at law enforcement and brutally attacked an Associated Press photographer, dragging him down a flight of stairs. Following the carnage, he remorselessly bragged about his actions on Facebook. In private messages, he boasted, "I make a charge for punching the camera guy but it was worth it. Hit him with everything god give. The crowd cheered." Sharing photos of blood pooled on the pavement, he texted an associate, "Man I've never seen anything like this. I feel so alive." He later doubled down on the violence, writing, "I'm not ever sorry some got hurt, could have been me. My only intentions were to drag these fucking criminals onto constitution blvd and pound their head in." When federal agents finally cornered Milstreed at a Colorado hotel room in May 2022, they discovered he wasn't just a threat on the Capitol steps. Investigators seized an unregistered AR-15 assault rifle along with a stash of 94 illegal steroid vials. Facing the reality of prison, his tough-guy internet persona evaporated before a federal judge, writing in a letter of contrition, "I know what I did that day was very wrong." He ultimately pleaded guilty to felony assault with a dangerous weapon and a federal firearms charge. In September 2023, a federal judge sentenced him to 5 years (60 months) in prison. However, on January 20, 2025, Donald Trump used his presidential powers to grant a wave of blanket pardons and commutations to January 6 defendants. Milstreed was officially released from prison early as a result of these executive orders.
