According to the Tennessee Department of Correction, staff confirmed Morley was missing around 11:30 p.m. Sunday and immediately conducted an emergency count and search. Investigators reviewed security footage and determined he breached the perimeter fence while wearing his prison uniform. Officials have not publicly explained precisely how he got through the fence. TDOC also lists convictions for aggravated burglary, tampering with evidence, evading arrest and vandalism. The murder victim was his co-worker, Cody Birchfield, who was killed in 2022. According to the Associated Press, Birchfield’s body was discovered in a box beneath Morley’s home after he had been missing for several weeks. Authorities also said Morley previously led deputies on a chase that ended in North Carolina.
