Abdul El-Sayed should not be in the U.S. Senate. His own half-sister, Eman Abdelhadi, posted in 2012–2013 that their family “has long been MB” (Muslim Brotherhood), that she had family members jailed for it, and that their mother was active in the Brotherhood as a college student in Egypt in the early 1970s. El-Sayed has flatly denied any family ties. On Meet the Press he answered “No.” He later dismissed his sister’s posts as “hearsay.” Here’s the part that should alarm everyone: Senators DO NOT go through a security clearance process. By tradition, simply being elected to a constitutional office is treated as sufficient. Their access to classified information is controlled by committee assignments, which party leadership decides. Ted Cruz has warned that if El-Sayed wins, Chuck Schumer could place him on the Senate Intelligence Committee. That would give him access to some of the most sensitive national security information in the country, without any formal background investigation. Senators with that level of access to classified intelligence should be required to go through a real security clearance process. Right now, they don’t. Is this the person we want with that kind of access?
