Passionate about treatment & research of ME/CFS and LC. Chronic illness deserves chronic curiosity. @RehabHopkins and @HopkinsKids. My opinions are my own.

Two energizing days @NIH for “From Mechanisms to Medicine: Rethinking the Discovery-to-Care Continuum in Multi-System Disorders.” Scientists, clinicians, and people with lived experience in one room—thinking across #MECFS, #LongCOVID, pain, migraine, endometriosis, PTLD & more.

And this wasn’t just about mechanisms. We talked about the difficult space between discovery → validation → clinical trials → implementation → care—and how to shorten that distance for patients who are living with disabling multisystem illness now.

Progress will come faster when we stop studying complex chronic illnesses in isolation. Shared biology. Shared tools. Shared clinical challenges. And importantly, patients at the table alongside clinicians and scientists. That’s how we move from mechanisms to medicine. 🧬➡️🩺

For the past four days, I have been in Amsterdam at the @ISLC_PAIS meeting, alongside scientists, physicians, clinicians, patients, and advocates from around the world. There was incredible science presented—work that genuinely makes me hopeful about where this field is going1/

Sometimes the anger created by that reality lands on clinicians. I understand where the anger comes from, and will never take it personally. I will continue to listen, show compassion, and continue trying to bridge the gap between science & what patients need from us today. 9/

None of the perspectives is sufficient alone. And none should be treated as though it matters less. Now it’s time to get back home, and get back to work.

I am proud to have been invited to Amsterdam. I am grateful to have participated, and I came home genuinely excited about the science I heard. But I also came home believing even more strongly that progress requires patients, scientists, and frontline clinicians at the same table.
