SETTLEMENT CRACKDOWN SOFTENS
Asked on Sky News whether she backs a 15-year wait for permanent residency, Angela Rayner wouldn't say yes. She has already called the plan un-British.
Now the Home Secretary's reforms look set to be watered down to head off a Labour rebellion.

BICESTER CAMP FIGHT
Villagers near the old MoD Bicester site are suing the Home Office. Their best legal hope? Newts, bats and badgers.
Ministers fast-tracked a camp for up to 1,256 men with no local say. When wildlife law is a village's only defence, the system is broken.

EVEN LABOUR MPS WANT BORDER CONTROL
Labour's Preet Kaur Gill says constituents constantly tell her they want tough action and secure borders. She calls the billions spent housing illegal arrivals "outrageous".
Ministers are out of excuses. Close the hotels and deport.

RAYNER WON'T RULE IT OUT
Asked again and again on the BBC this morning whether Britain should go back to EU free movement, Housing Secretary Angela Rayner would not give a straight yes or no.
Labour's 2024 manifesto said in black and white there would be no return to freedom of movement. Now she wants an "honest conversation" about the "trade-offs" and to "put that to the people at a general election".
The British people already had that conversation in 2016. The answer was to take back control of our borders.
A promise that only lasts until the next manifesto is not a promise. It is a holding position.

THE RED LINE HAS A SELL-BY DATE
Labour MP Joe Powell told GB News this morning that the ban on EU free movement "stands for the duration of this parliament", and that at the next election it is "right and proper that we look again".
So the manifesto pledge was never a principle. It was a timetable.
Andy Burnham has already said free movement will not be a red line in talks with Brussels. Now his MPs are openly preparing the ground for it.
The British people voted to take back control of our borders. That decision is not Labour's to quietly unpick.

TAKEAWAY VISA LOOPHOLE
More than 3,600 takeaway shops in Britain are licensed to sponsor "skilled worker" visas, according to Telegraph analysis of official figures. Over 1,000 are in London alone, including at least 100 chicken, kebab and pizza outlets.
The rules say a skilled worker must earn at least £41,700 a year. Median pay in restaurants and takeaways is just under £30,000. Nearly 400 of the London licence holders have fewer than five staff, and some have just one.
A route meant for genuine skills has become a back door for cheap labour that undercuts British workers. The Home Office should audit every sponsor licence and revoke the ones that don't add up.

FREE MOVEMENT BACK ON THE TABLE
Andy Burnham has told the Sunday Times he wants an "honest discussion" about Britain rejoining EU free movement, the rule that let any of 450 million EU citizens come and live here.
Labour's 2024 manifesto ruled it out. In 2016, 17.4 million people voted to take back control of our borders.
Now, barely 100 days into the job, the Prime Minister is drawing up options and calling the old system a "revolving door".
Migration is already far beyond anything the public ever voted for. Opening yet another door is the last thing this country needs.
Britain made its decision. Labour should respect it.

THE GANGS COULD BE STOPPED
Filmmaker Anthony Rubin and his brother, two cameramen from America with no local connections, managed to find out when the boats were leaving Calais and Dunkirk, get inside the camps and film the criminal gangs running the crossings.
If two outsiders with a camera can do that, the French and British authorities certainly can.
His verdict on GB News: these smuggling networks could be broken up, but from what he witnessed there is no serious effort to do it.
Ministers keep promising to smash the gangs. The boats keep coming. Britain deserves a government that means it.

£21,635 TO EXPLAIN THE LAW
The Home Office has admitted it spent £21,635 of taxpayers' money developing a guide telling asylum seekers that rape, domestic abuse and sex without consent are crimes in this country.
Asylum minister Anna Turley confirmed the figure in a written answer this week. Not a single copy has even been printed.
Former Border Force chief Tony Smith sets out the real problem: people keep arriving by small boat from France with no documents, and once they reach our waters we are obliged to keep them here until their claims are decided.
A government that needs leaflets to explain basic law has lost control of its own borders. Stop the boats and stop wasting our money on gestures.

GOSPORT LEFT TO COPE ALONE
Channel 4 went to Gosport, the Hampshire naval town that has ended up on the front line of the small boats crisis.
On 4 October, 149 migrants picked up in the Channel were brought ashore there. The Home Office still can't say whether more will be landed in the town, and local authorities say the landings are putting significant pressure on already stretched resources.
Gosport has one of the highest concentrations of veterans in the country and is the most deprived district in Hampshire. Nobody asked the people who live there. They were simply told to cope.
The answer is not to spread the burden across more coastal towns. It is to stop the boats and return those who arrive illegally.

TEN YEARS ON FROM THE JUNGLE
Ten years ago this week, French police cleared the Calais "Jungle", the camp where thousands waited to cross the Channel to Britain.
France 24 went back. The site is now a protected nature area, but its reporter found dozens of smaller camps spread along the coast, and people still wading out to the boats.
The Home Office's own border security commander says almost 4,000 men are now camped in northern France waiting to cross, around double the usual number.
A decade of summits, deals and hundreds of millions paid to France, and the camps have simply moved further down the beach. Clearing a field is not border control. Britain must stop the boats at our end and return those who arrive.

ALL FOR SHOW IN CALAIS
GB News reporter Anthony Rubin filmed dozens of people running down a Calais beach and packing onto a small boat, and says there was not one French police officer there. When officers did eventually appear, he says it looked like it was all for show. British taxpayers have handed France hundreds of millions of pounds to stop these launches. Ministers should stop writing cheques and start demanding results.

SETTLEMENT RULES ALREADY BENDING
Reports say the Prime Minister is set to water down the Home Secretary's settlement reforms, with a fast-track for foreign care workers to head off a Labour revolt. Promised as a crackdown, now diluted before they have even begun.
