Consumer confidence bounced in October: the Conference Board index rose 7.5 pts to 91.7 from an upwardly revised 84.2.
Present Situation +8.6 to 120.4; Expectations +6.9 to 72.6. Inflation expectations eased but sit at 5.8%.

Builders said they were gloomy yesterday (NAHB index: 29).
Today's data backed them up: September housing starts fell 5.2% to a 1.221M pace, down 7.4% y/y. Permits held near flat at 1.400M, so the pipeline isn't shrinking fast, but it isn't growing either.
