When I write my historical novels I seldom subject my characters to real-world levels of darkness, but provide them with powerful moonlight, shining on cobbles, picking out faces...Whilst in reality such light only happens once a month. Well, tonight is that one night a month.

St Crispin's Day - which means it's #Agincourt time! OTD at Azincourt in 1415, forces under Henry V scored an unexpected victory against the French, an event made ever-famous by Mr Wm. Shakespeare. Noteworthy was the rapid fire of his archers, the machine-gunners of their day.

good advice to anyone self publishing an e book
This complaint is legit; the book won’t even open on my Kindle—purchased off Amazon as a Kindle Book. Is the one-star justified? Also, authors: don’t do this to your book. With only 47 ratings, a one-star has a HUGE effect on your overall rating.

The Goodman's Fields theatre stood in Alie Street, Whitechapel for a few short years before it was closed in 1742 . Now a supermarket stands on the site. In my book Upstaged my Murder, out on November 24th, there is a night time break in to the theatre. #UpstagedbyMurder

Just as there is no ethical handling of stolen goods, *of course* for writers there is no ethical approach to AI

I have reminded myself that Upton House, near Banbury has a great display of 18th century pictures. Including some Hogarth originals

I happen to be reading The Road to Wigan Pier at the moment and the clarity of Orwell's arguments and elegance of his language are almost unbeatable

A Short Lesson in Cause and Effect There is nothing complicated about this. The United States buys Russian diesel, which puts money in Moscow's pocket. Moscow then spends part of that money on backing, arming and shielding Iran. Iran, in turn, uses that support to hit American bases, ships and soldiers. So the money leaves America as a fuel payment and comes back as incoming fire, which is about as clear a result as foreign policy ever produces. I would love to say this takes some expertise to grasp, but it really doesn't. Most people work out by the age of ten that you shouldn't pay the people who are helping someone hurt you. The Trump administration has had rather longer than that to think it over.

A fine book of history, well worth its length and weight. Not ideal for reading on trains or in bed though. Anyway, read more here thepastinthepresent.substack…
