The Detail Hidden in the Gilligan's Island Opening Credits
You've probably watched the opening credits of Gilligan's Island dozens of times.
The Minnow leaves the harbor, the familiar theme song begins, and seven unsuspecting passengers set off on what was supposed to be a three-hour tour.
But there's something in those opening moments that most viewers never noticed.
An American flag flying at half-staff.
And the reason has nothing to do with the show's fictional shipwreck.
In November 1963, the production crew was in Hawaii filming footage for the series' pilot when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated.
The tragedy interrupted production. When filming resumed, the flag visible near the harbor was flying at half-staff.
That brief moment made its way into the show's first-season opening credits.
For generations, viewers watched the Minnow sail away without realizing that a small detail in the background reflected what was happening in the real world.
It's an extraordinary contrast: the beginning of one of television's most lighthearted sitcoms quietly preserving a moment of national grief.
Sometimes the smallest details in the shows we remember have the biggest stories behind them.

BREAKING: House Judiciary Democrats just released a 50-page report alleging Trump was an “active participant” in Jeffrey Epstein’s sexual abuse of young women in the mid-to-late 1990s.
The report, titled “The Case Against Donald Trump Emerging in the Epstein Files and DOJ’s Desperate Efforts to Cover It Up,” cites five women who accused Trump of rape or sexual assault in Epstein’s company and calls for an independent special counsel to investigate the president, co-conspirators, and what Democrats describe as the Justice Department’s cover-up under AG Todd Blanche.

Hank Aaron is greeted at home plate by his Braves teammates after hitting a two-run home run in Game 3 of the 1957 World Series at County Stadium in Milwaukee on October 5, 1957 — the first World Series game ever played in Milwaukee.
The Yankees had already turned the afternoon into a rout. Milwaukee starter Bob Buhl was knocked out in the first inning, New York led 7-1 by the fifth, and rookie Tony Kubek, a Milwaukee native playing his first major league game in his hometown, homered twice for the Yankees while Mickey Mantle added another in a 12-3 win before 45,804. Aaron's homer was the home crowd's one big moment: Johnny Logan led off the fifth with a single, and Aaron drove a 3-and-1 pitch from reliever Don Larsen — making his first Series appearance since his perfect game the October before — into the deep right-center field seats.
Milwaukee won the Series anyway, in seven games. Aaron hit a three-run homer off Tom Sturdivant in Game 4 the next afternoon, a game the Braves stole in the 10th when Nippy Jones showed umpire Augie Donatelli the shoe polish on a ball that had grazed his foot and Eddie Mathews followed with a walk-off two-run homer to win it 7-5. In Game 6, Aaron tied the game with a seventh-inning home run off Bob Turley before Hank Bauer answered in the bottom half to win it 3-2 for New York. Lew Burdette, traded away by the Yankees six years earlier, beat them three times — complete games in Games 2, 5 and 7, the last two of them shutouts, the last thrown on two days' rest with Warren Spahn sick with the flu — and took the Series MVP award with a 0.67 ERA. Aaron batted .393 with three home runs and seven RBIs, capping a season in which the 23-year-old won his only MVP award, led the league with 44 home runs and 132 RBIs, and clinched the pennant with a walk-off home run on September 23.

Brewers are now 112-60 on the season.
52 games over .500
They are 14-1 in their last 15 games going back to a series in Philly. That 1 loss, was the loss by 1 run to the Padres.

Mike Lawler had a lot to say about home heating oil costs when he first ran for Congress in 2022.
Now? Not so much.
Maybe it’s because HE has no plan to fix it and voted (6x!) for the Iran War that created this mess in the first place.
#TheRealMikeLawler is a hypocrite, #NY17.
Home heating oil now costs $5.99 per gallon — it will cost the average homeowner over $1,000 to fill their tank. @spmaloney has no plan to fix it and in fact voted for the policies that created this mess in the first place.

“This is typical of the Democrats. They just lie and make things up. I will not cut Social Security, Medicare, or Medicaid.”
4 months after this clip, Mike Lawler voted to cut Medicare and Medicaid in the One Big Ugly Bill.
#TheRealMikeLawler lied to you, #NY17.
Again.
