Also, please see our recent publication by Ndung'u et al. They showed that when accounting for only milk and meat output of smallholder systems, emissions intensities were lower than believed.

Simplistic and one-sided narratives about livestock and animal products are misleading and dangerous 🐂
Ahead of #WorldFoodDay on Sunday, we ask how can the livestock sector contribute to an environmentally just future? Answer: Pastoralism! @PASTRES_erc

This is the most thorough documentation of the anthropogenic threats to traditional pastoralism I've seen. I still see too much environmental discourse saying pastoralism is somehow a problem, but this shows why and how pastoralist livelihoods AND wildlife are under pressure
New Article: Wildlife and pastoralists are rapidly running out of space in Kenya, with over 40,000 km of fencing proliferating on private land across the famous Amboseli, the South Rift, Loita and Mara ecosystems. 🧵frontiersin.org/articles/10.…

I've spent much of my career in comms trying to figure out how to generate attention for major catastrophes like the one now unfolding in the Horn of Africa--I have to say, without much success.
Imagine having your crops go from thriving to nothing due to extreme weather events in 2021. People in Africa are the most impacted by hunger, with about 120M people suffering a hunger crisis. We must act now! #ActOnClimate

Pioneer farmers: we scientists/extensionists/policy makers have to overcome our biases and listen to them as modern innovators. They are making the future while we talk about it. Thanks @ArndtClaudia for bringing this to attention!
We need to quantify the #ClimateChange adaptation & mitigation strategies.
We have pioneer farmers already innovating.
We should encourage them!

Check out our new blog post on the latest research from @ILRI Mazingira reviewing #GHG emissions from #livestock in #Africa. This is a good summary if you don't want to read the whole article!
@ArndtClaudia @sonja_leitner
New research on livestock #GHG emissions show methane emissions may be lower for cattle in Africa than previously reported. Major data gaps still exist. More research is needed to reduce emissions, improve productivity and meet Africa’s climate goals.
