#33 The Mummy (1999—dir. Stephen Sommers) TY @RegalMovies+25th Anniversary Re-Release—Somehow saw 2008 sequel Tomb of the Dragon Emperror on the big screen w/ family—FINALLY SEEN—(Yes, I know it's a childhood staple for many...but does it deserve it? Well...) ...Nope, not going to apologize. Paced like an Indiana Jones Raiders of the Lost Ark+Last Crusade mashup...if one SKIPPED most of the cutscenes to get to the shoot-'em-up action setpieces quicker—TONS of dated CG VFX enhancing EVERY SINGLE FX-driven moment+explosion+weather phenomena+Even when hybrid, you can TELL when practical FX end+CGI begins=DISTRACTING AF—UNDESERVED lingering deaths for nearly all supporting characters IDGAF about. IDGAF about loud+gun-crazy+simple-minded USA competition or what their names are—Introduced as characters you KNOW are fodder, yet fodder moments=Given TOO MUCH prominence when they happen—Unworthy of the fly that lands on Raiders of the Lost Ark's René Belloq. I guess Fraser+Weisz know what rollercoaster of an acting gig they're headlining—Fraser's "Rick O'Connell" = Capable + level-headed + no-nonsense + Knows how/when to make quips/meme moments + Script gives him LITTLE beyond that + Okay mercenary w/ little backstory + Knows whatever archaeology script requires him to know for current situation, but his grasp of it does little encourage audience to learn about it themselves—Weisz's "Evelyn Carnahan"=Almost comes off like "Oh, woe is me in this patriarchal archaeology world"+Thankfully reveals herself as plucky "Hermione" booksmart-only type who could use adventure in the field+Is up to the challenge enough. Hannah's "Jonathan Carnahan"=Aside from SINGLE clever moment of imitating "Im-ho-tep" zombies to get past them, would've served as hapless+scummy supporting role that O'Connor's "Beni Gabor" embodies effectively. Titanic 1997 veterans Jonathan Hyde gets stupid honorable sacrifice demise+Bernard Fox's character could've been in live-action Porco Rosso remake. I don't hate this and I don't mean to stomp all over everyone's nostalgia, but...Why the F would anyone settle for this over Indiana Jones?? Why bother settling for the discounted+less-intelligent work when the superior product is right there, entertaining w/ superior cinematic craft WHILE encouraging+stimulating the intellect?? FINAL NOTE: If you're an Oscars voter and you voted for Brendan Fraser's fat suit awards bait (The Whale) in Best Actor 2022 over Colin Farrell (The Banshees of Inisherin, FOREVER criminally underrated for going 0/9 at the 95th Academy Awards), SOLELY out of nostalgia for works like The Mummy franchise and/or out of amusement for that 1 promotional Whale image we had all that year and/or out of sympathy for Fraser as a sexual harassment victim, then frankly SCREW YOU for denying Farrell after he gave THAT towering performance of the ages.
