THREAD: FAKE BREAD IN SA - What you need to know 🍞⚠️
IT'S REAL
South Africa is seeing a rise in counterfeit bread. SAPS and Health inspectors have been raiding warehouses and spaza shops since 2024. Bread is copied because it's bought EVERY DAY and people don't check it.
HOW THEY DO IT
They buy empty branded plastic bags (Blue Ribbon, Albany, Sasko) on the black market, or print similar ones. Bake bread in unlicensed warehouses, no health inspection, no gloves, no hairnets, pack it and supply to informal markets.
WHY IT'S DANGEROUS
Real bakeries have:
- Pest control
- Clean water tests
- Temperature control
- Expiry tracking
Fake warehouses have none. Flour stored next to chemicals, rats, reused oil. In 2024, 20+ kids died from fake/expired food. Bread is next.
*4/8 - NORTH WEST & WESTERN CAPE CASES
Last month SAPS North West seized R260M+ of counterfeit goods in Rustenburg, Klerksdorp, Potch, Mafikeng etc. In Bellville, a warehouse was found with crates of bread branded as Blue Ribbon but without Premier Foods safety codes.
HOW TO SPOT FAKE BREAD - 5 SEC CHECK:
1. Bag: Original is clear print, sharp logo. Fake is blurry, faded colour
2. Seal: Original has printed expiry + factory code. Fake has sticker or hand-written date
3. Bread itself: Original is uniform. Fake is too white, crumbles, sour smell
4. Price: If Blue Ribbon is R18 at Shoprite and someone sells at R9 from a crate, ask yourself
5. Where: Is it coming from a Premier truck or a bakkie / back room?
WHAT THE LAW SAYS
Manufacturing food without a Certificate of Acceptability is illegal under Foodstuffs Act. Counterfeiting a trademark is a criminal offence - up to 3 years. If caught, owner gets arrested, shop closed, stock destroyed.
WHAT TO DO IF YOU BOUGHT IT*
- DO NOT EAT IT
- Keep the bag + slip
- Take photo + video of where you bought it
- Report on MySAPS App or 08600 10111
- Report to your municipality Environmental Health
- Report to Premier Foods: 0860 100 829
FINAL WORD
Check your bread like you check your airtime. Your kids eat this every morning.
If you have seen fake bread in your area, comment the area below. Let's map it.

*Tshitso Mothesele (36) from Khutsong was sentenced to 8 life terms and 195 years direct imprisonment by the High Court in Pretoria.
What the NPA confirmed:
- He was convicted for offences on 16 female victims, youngest 11 years old, 6 of them minors, while the oldest was 35
- He committed them between 2017 and 2018 in and around Carletonville. His method: target women/girls when they got off public transport, drag them to a nearby veld, rape and rob them
- He was arrested on 15 December 2018 when a phone he stole from one victim was traced to a lady in Khutsong who he had sold it to. He was later linked by DNA
The judge ordered his name be added to the National Register for Sexual Offenders and declared unfit to possess a firearm.
TimesLIVE reported the same: 8 life terms plus 195 years, 15 counts of rape, 8 counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances and kidnapping, and that 6 victims were minors.

Men feel as if the universe belongs to them when an ovulating woman passes by—the head in their pants no longer just dangling, but standing alone and insistent.

Why our South African Celebrities are QUITE ABOUT ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION AND DEPORTATION - but it's probably not the ALL the reason.
If we break it down, why South African celebs are quiet on illegal immigration / deportation:
1. The business argument - on what Iam saying:
Yes, for a lot of SA artists, their market isn't just SA. Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Zambia, Kenya are huge markets for gigs, collabs, endorsements. Being seen as strongly anti-immigrant or pro-deportation could get you cancelled or boycotted there, and promoters won't book you. So staying quiet is commercially safer.
2. Brand and industry pressure:
Most big celebs are signed to brands, management, record labels that tell them to avoid anything that can be labelled xenophobic. One tweet can cost you a sponsorship. In SA entertainment, being called xenophobic is career-ending, so many just avoid the topic completely.
3. Personal views:
Some genuinely see it from a Pan-African / humanitarian angle. They've worked with artists from other countries, have friends who are immigrants, and don't agree with mass deportation.
4. Fear of backlash at home too:
SA audiences are split. If you speak for deportation, part of the country calls you xenophobic. If you speak against it, another part calls you a sellout. Quiet is the easiest.
5. They don't see it as their lane:
A lot of celebs just think politics, immigration, Home Affairs - that's not their job. They do music, acting, presenting.
Performing in other countries is definitely part of it for many - especially musicians and DJs who tour the continent - but for others it's more about brand protection and not wanting to get dragged.
@grok please include more valid reasons as to why.

Here are the verified news behind Tsontso's watch this happened on Monday, 20 Oct 2026 at Kempton Park Magistrates Court:
Who is Tsontso?
Elizabeth "Tsontso" Moselakgomo, 38, a runner from Kempton Park. She disappeared on 9 September after leaving home for a run. Her body was found 3 days later in Rhodesfield, Ekurhuleni. Her 8-year-old daughter raised the alarm when she didn't return.
The smartwatch case (separate from murder):
Her Garmin Venu smartwatch (worth R9,000 - R11,000) allegedly changed hands within 24 hours after she disappeared:
Accused 1: Kenneth Chibuzor — Nigerian national, runs a second-hand goods shop in Kempton Park. Allegedly bought the watch for R900 on 10 Sept.
Accused 2: Stephen Mahlakwane Sekhukhune — allegedly bought it from Chibuzor, erased Tsontso's data and registered it with his Gmail.
Accused 3: Danial Anthony Moat allegedly advertised it on Facebook Marketplace for R4,000.
All 3 face charges of theft / possession of stolen property / money laundering. Chibuzor also faces charges under Second-Hand Goods Act. None of them are charged with her murder.
What happened in court this week:
- Sekhukhune and Moat were granted bail of R10,000 each, to return 9 December for further investigation.
- Chibuzor remains in custody. Bail application postponed to 27 October because the state still needs to verify his immigration documents/passport.
Why he cried:
During the hearing, the court heard Chibuzor is guardian of a young child whose mother left when the child was 3. Since his arrest, the child has been staying with a friend. The magistrate raised concerns about the child's welfare and said social services will assess the care arrangements.
He became emotional when explaining this, which is the moment on the photo.
